Ok, well i'm now struggling with junction view and speedcameras too!
Managhed to find a couple of UK speedcamera files, .gpi format, copied them to an SD card, in the garmin\POI folder.
How the heck do I get them top show on a map? I cannot see them when I look in the location where I know there are cameras.
Same with junction view, I think I have the correct file D2504280A.jcv it's in the garmin\JCV folder, but I have never seen it display.
When I look in system config for the head unit, Base ma, Detail Map and jucntion view are now all displaying correct versions, but I cannot see them on the
screen?

Then i'd conclude that's due to some corruption or incorrect info on the GarminDevice.xml file. It's ONLY that file from which GE gets the information (a) about your device; and (b) whether it has an entitlement to download; and (c) which files, both map and additional files like JCV etc., to write to the SD Card.

Inability to copy a file (not marked 'read only') is likely an indication that the file is badly corrupt. I'd suggest you try to open the original gmapbmap.img and gmapsupp.img directly from the microSD using GMapTool (linked earlier in Post #2) and see if the tool reports any error or can even open them at all.I 'may' have made some progress, I found the Kenwood service manual for a similar model head unit, in the schematic, it showed an SD card slot and also an Micro SD slot.

I've tried manuall copying each file into a folder on the PC and several of them fail to copy, importantly, two that fail are GMAPBMAP.IMG and GMAPSUPP.IMG, which I guess is why in system menu, it is showing base map and detail map as missing.
By 'drive' you mean the microSD i suppose. That tool chkdsk is looking for physical problems such as bad blocks rather than file corruption. Although file corruption can be caused by physical damage on the underlying media it actually doesn't happen the other way around in practice.I've tried running windows disk checker and it says the drive is ok.
It's great that you tried that and it worked but you shouldn't have had to do it. The way this type of Kenwood uses mapping data updates is different to the DNX9990HD and others mentioned predominantly in the thread you linked in Post #9. They update by copying the new maps etc from the external SD card onto the unit's internal flash memory which is eMMC (MultiMediaCard, abbreviated MMC, is basically an early form of the SD card. An eMMC is one soldered directly to the PCB). You device is different to ones like the 9990HD in two ways: (i) it has a removable microSD rather than an eMMC to hold the original factory loaded navigation files; and (ii) those original files on your internal microSD are ignored when later files are added on the external SD card. The device looks first at the external card on startup of the nav function and if there's no usable files there it should default to using the factory files on the internal microSD. They are the devices such as DNX7230DAB mentioned in that other thread as running files directly from S\external SD. The 7230DAB uses exactly the same firmware as your 4230DAB:Ok, Further update, the card from inside the head unit is partitioned into two partitions, a small fat 10kb partition, and a larger 7.8gb ex-fat partition. .......
Which raises another point, did you check that the firmware is up to date before running GE? I think GE will look for that and the SD card won't get updated maps etc. if the firmware listed in the XML file is old. You should be running V1.12.0.Code:Please Login or Register to see the links
Yes, the caveat is that it seems not to be reading properly from the external SD card. Can the unit play MP3 files from the external card?..........
I now get maps and icons :-), routing works and I get voices outut to the speakers, so it looks like it is all working.

That's certainly the correct JCV file for the EU NT 2020.20 map. There are [basically] 2 types of JCV file, the one you have uses SVG images. The other type, usually associated with EU NTU (unicode) mapping uses Raster images. If indeed your device can use the SVG type of JCV file and can be put into navigation simulation mode, just simulate a route from the center of London to Manchester (just use the city names only for start and destination) and scroll thru the route. If you have the correct JCV file for the device it will show several Views on that route. Originally Posted by ffrlr

Oh, it was definately the internal SD card that was corrupt, in fact I thik it is physically damaged.
After getting it all working with a new Kingston 8GB card, i've just tried to open the GMAPBMAP.IMG and GMAPSUPP.IMG files in the Gmaptool as you suggested and it will not open them at all.
So, i've then tried to format the original internal SD card in windows, it fails to format the larger partition contnually reports crc error.
I then tried to format it in Linux, that too fails, I used gparted to remove the partitions and then tried to create a single partition and reformat that, gparted will not write the new partition table to the card.
I did as you said, route from my home to London, and junction view does work, I was expecting it to show junction images at more junctions (minor road junctions) , I guess, but when on a motorway, or dual carriageway, then they are shown.
No joy with speedcameras, I downloaded the file Boki_Srb suggested, copied the UK cameras into the Garmin\POI folder, but they don't show up on the map, nor when I simulate the route do I see them.
I'll have to play some more today and see if I can progress them.
I am wondering if I remove the detail map from the internal SD card, then put the unit back together, if I can copy the city navigator map and he POI's to a second SD card and keep that in the front SD card slot.
It would make changing the maps easier in future.
I am sure the issues I had originally were all down to the internal SD card being damaged / corrupt, since re-creating the internal card, everything has worked perfctly, the icons and symbols have all come back which were missing on the original card.
Yes, before I embarked on this journey, I updated the nav software to 1.12.0
I tried to put some audio files on the external SD card, the media player doesn't seem to access the SD, only files on the USB stick, I think that the SD card on the front is just for maps.

I did post a quick reply earlier this morning, but it doesn't seems to have shown up yet.
I've removed the GMAPSUPP.IMG from the internal SD card, but left the base map on there, also removed the JCV folder.
Now without the external SD card in, all I am seeing is the base map with major roads.
On the external SD card, I have a 'garmin folder', with the GMAPSUPP.IMG for the UK, inside that, a 'voices' folder with a few additional unlocked voices, a 'POI' folder with the UK speedcamera .gpi file Boki_Srb suggested, along with a few other .gpi files for supermarkets and camp grounds etc and a 'vehicle' folder with a few additional cars and finally the JCV folder with the junction view file.
Runing the navigator app on the headunit without the externmal card installed, I am only seeing major roads :-), I then insert the external SD card and it displays loading maps..., then once that is complete, I see the UK detailed maps :-) so it is reading the external front sd card, simulating a route, once on a motorway or dual carriageway, I am seeing the junction view :-)
But, I cannot see any of the poi's, do I have to enable them somewhere within the menu's? I also am unable to select any of the voice files that I copied into the voices folder or any of the vehicles.
In case the earlier reply didn't get through, yes, I did update the firmware in the head unit to 1.12.0 before this journey started, in case that was the reason it didn't work initially.
The original internal SD card is definately damaged, I am unable to reformat it in either Windows or Linux, nor can I repartition it in either OS.
Just following on from the above, I've moved the entire POI and Vehciles folders, from the external SD car onto the internal one along with the contents of the voices folder.
Now, when I restart the unit I am able to go into categories, POI's and select custom, I can see the supermarkets etc that I couldn't with the files on the external SD card.
Same with the vehicles and voices, I am now able to select them, but couldn't when they were on the external card.
Not sure about speed cameras yet I am not able to view them on the map, there are several close to me here, they are showing in the .gpi file when I have conerted it to a .csv I am able to see them, but cannot on the Kenwood map shown on the head unit.
