Yes that is correct, unable to download using garminexpress.
I 'may' have made some progress, I found the Kenwood service manual for a similar model head unit, in the schematic, it showed an SD card slot and also an Micro SD slot.
this got me wondering whether the head unit has an internal SD card slot, so in desperation, I removed the head unit from the truck, and took of the lid.
After removing the dvd drive, there beneath it is a Sandisk 8gb SD card.
I've removed the card, and tried to image it using Win32diskimager, it failed saying unable to read the card.
In Windows, I can see the files on the card, it's similar to how I built the external sd card, with similarly named files etc.
I've tried manuall copying each file into a folder on the PC and several of them fail to copy, importantly, two that fail are GMAPBMAP.IMG and GMAPSUPP.IMG, which I guess is why in system menu, it is showing base map and detail map as missing.
I've tried running windows disk checker and it says the drive is ok.
I have nothing to lose, so after lunch, I am going to try and make a new card, using all the files off the one I removed from inside the head unit, but not the files that I cannot copy, i'll replace those with the ones I downloaded earlier and see if that helps, failing that, i'll have to try and find someone else with the same head unit, and try and image their card to rebuild mine with their image.
I don't want to change or modify the card I removed from inside the head unit at this stage just in case there is something on there that is vital, such as a serial number or ID code etc.
Ok, Further update, the card from inside the head unit is partitioned into two partitions, a small fat 10kb partition, and a larger 7.8gb ex-fat partition.
I took a Kingston 8gb SD card, and using windows created two new partitions on it identical to the ones on the Sandisk internal card I removed.
Then copied the Garmin folder and contents from the original card small partition onto the Kingston small partition.
I then repeated the process on the larger partition, leaving off the files I couldn't copy which were a couple of vehicle images, and the GMAPBMAP.IMG and GMAPSUPP.IMG files and another file call Diag with 0 bytes size.
I then used the GB & ROI file I downloaed, renamed it to gmapsupp.img and the basemap I downloaded gmapbmap.img, copied those to the new Kingston sd card in the garmin folder on the big partition.
Ejected the card, put it back insid ethe head unit, reassembled it and switched on ..........
I now get maps and icons :-), routing works and I get voices outut to the speakers, so it looks like it is all working.
I am now going to remove the internal card again and create a full image of the entire card for safekeeping, then I can try and get junction view and speed cameras working.
Butters, thank you so much for sticking with me on this project, you have helped immensley, i'll do a final update when I have got speedcameras and junction view working :-))))
