Ok, I'll try that, thank you. I did look on this site (see below) and it seems that my model of Garmin will accept Topo maps

So I'm guessing that the problem is my stupidity in the process rather than anything else !

TOPO Great Britain, Northern England & the Midlands is not a raster map is a vector map and is compatible with Etrex Legend and it is in this map compatibility list as stated here:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    and...
The Garmin Discoverer series of mapping products contains some raster mapping as part of the map image. These raster maps are compatible with most current Garmin Outdoor Series devices.
Note by catymag: I don't think even Etrex 10 is compatible for example.

Ah, yes, things making sense now. So if I stick with topo I should be ok? It still seems a complicated process from looking at the threads

Ha ha ...I was meaning the process once downloaded! I think because I've only ever connected my Garmin to the PC once before, it will need it's firmware updating before I even think about adding maps. I'm determined to get this working though and will stick at it and no doubt do everyone's heads in on this forum asking for help. I'd better add in advance that you are doing a fantastic job and have immense patience

Provided you've now grasped the fact that your old Legend only can use Vector Topos and not anything with Raster content then you should be cool.
Unless you want to go to Bulgaria , the rest of EU is closed to you for Garmin Topos except for [lucky you Yorkie!] TOPO Great Britain!:

We have the V2 here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and the link is still active thanks to catymag. It's a MapSource version so read the instructions in the first post, and also have a look at [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

EDIT: You've said you have an eTrex Legend which is the blue bodied unit with grayscale [no colour] map screen, it doesn't have a card slot and only a tiny internal memory [8MB for the Legend & 24MB for the Legend H]. But you also said that your unit takes an sd card, that's more likely to be a Legend Cx or HCx which both take a microSD, have a colour screen and accept a far wider variety of maps that the older blue Legends. So what do you actually have: Legend/Legend H/Legend C [no card] or Cx/HCx? It makes a big difference if it's either of the last 2 which take a data card.

In that case i've given you some very wrong info unintentionally. The Legend/Legend H and the Legend HCx are very different units. The compatible maps list for your HCx is far more comprehensive than the older and very basic Legend, but you can still forget about using any raster map including ones with both vector & raster content such as GB Discoverer series :

No worries, at least it has more possibilities than first thought, I'll be happy to get the GB Topo map on it if I can. Do I need to set up anything on the PC or can I just download, unlock straight onto the SD card ?

If you dl an image file you can put it straight onto the microSD. sd:/Garmin/gmapsupp.img is the correct path. If you need to unlock an image: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. If you dl the GB V2 Vector Topo the instal instructions are in Post #1 there but don't bother with the JM unlock, just use gimgunlock. If you need further help then post in the relevant map thread.
