Do the same as you did before except this time do not "make cure" use "make firmware." When I did this initially, I pressed the "make firmware" button then used the 'Updater.exe button to update the device. The 'Cure' button has always been selected.
Then reflash the Nuvi again with the firmware. It's worth a try.
Maybe you are still running the cure firmware now.
And what is this "cat" you speak of, the screen should display the Garmin logo.

When my device starts up I get the Garmin logo for a few seconds then it goes to a picture of a cat siting on a window ledge. it used to say "loading maps' underneath this picture when it worked fine..
