The GPSMAP series had the power button on the side it is only the new 66 that they put it on the top.
Guessing you have never seen the original GPS 60 or GPSMAP 60 series units (the series that set the gold standard)?

They also have the power button on the top of the device 8^)

Placing the power button in a location on the device that is easily or commonly gripped turns out to be not the best solution. Placing this button so that it is not likely to be pressed accidentally is much more desirable.
