That maybe true about protecting you critical equipment. But sooner or later you have to stop and take out your GPS to get your bearings.
The same holds true for all the user's who take their smpartphone on a hiking trip. Some of these phones are in the range of 600 to 1000 euros.
They walk around with them in their hands all day. They are not attached to anything and are very easy to be stolen.
It is a balance as to how well you protect what you have with you and how best to use it in the wilderness.
Keeping anything in your hand while hiking can be very dangerous. More so when you are by yourself.
Having your hand free and not having a GPS Unit or smartphone in you hand is far safer.
Going in groups adds to the safety along with using some form of support in your hands.
But to each of his or her way of doing things. How I do things best fits may needs how you do it fits your needs.
