Formatted my BMW Motorrad Navigator V

I have formatted the internal drive on my BMW Motorrad Navigator V (not the SD Card) and now the Navigator starts and goes to 'Where To' screen but I see no maps whatsoever and garmin express does not recognize it when connected to my computer.

I found the following article on this site and followed the instructions but it doesn't work.

I believe I know how to recover my SatNav but I'm in need of someone with a BMW Motorad Navigator V that knows there way around a computer (unless anyone out there knows of another way to do this).

During my diagnostics, Garmin showed me a setting which will allow someone to provide me with the data I need:

You'll need the SatNav, a Windows Computer and the USB cable to connect to computer:
1. Remove the SD Card if you have one installed.
2. Boot the SatNav.
3. Click on Volume.
4. Press and hold top right of display - after 5-7 seconds a menu will appear.
5. Scroll down and click - MTP Settings.
6. The device should be set to MTP Auto Detect, select Mass Storage and click on Save.
7. Connect the SatNav to your Windows computer and wait... mine took a while 1-2 minutes but eventually the Windows showed the SatNav as a drive.

At this point your Windows computer sees the SatNav as a drive and you should be able to view the drive in Windows Explorer. I think the drive should be labelled GARMIN.

First thing to do is copy all the files and folders to your computer. The instructions below are from Windows 10:
1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Click on 'This PC' and then open the drive GARMIN.
3. We need to make sure hidden files and folders are also copied so from the top menu click on the 'View' tab, then click Options, click the 'View' tab and then select 'Show hidden files, folders and drives and then click on 'OK'.
4. You should be looking at all the files and folders in the GARMIN drive so select all (press Ctrl + A on keyboard) and then Copy.
5. Create a folder on your desktop and then paste the files into the folder.

The files and folders are pretty big so would need to be shared on a sharing system such as DropBox.

The very last thing for you to do is to remember to put your SatNav back as it was:
1. Boot the SatNav.
2. Click on Volume.
3. Press and hold top right of display - after 5-7 seconds a menu will appear.
4. Scroll down and click - MTP Settings.
5. Set to MTP Auto Detect and click on Save.
6. Put your SD Card back in if you had one and restart the unit if required

Firstly, the other poster in the linked thread had a faulty format and so re-formatting correctly with RMPrepUSB would have worked for him to re-enable Mass Storage Mode (MSM).

Next, your Navigator V isn't 'bricked', it is simply just missing the necessary files to use. You actually don't need someone with another Nav V to give you the files because you can get all of them (except a basemap) from GarminExpress which should see your device if it's indeed capable of booting to the "Where To?/View Map" Screen. Also once your device is recognized in MSM (not MTP, i.e. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], assuming you're correct that it is an MTP device) and you've set your PC to see hidden system files so that the device's .System folder is accessible then you can manually add a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I don't have that device however i'm happy to help you further with this if needed, i think the Nav V is actually a modified zumo from memory. Please read the first linked thread about setting it up for MSM if required and also the necessary PC settings. Post again if you're still needing assistance.

Originally I followed the following article sent to me by Garmin Support using the Mac section - [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Therefore I had formatted it to MS-DOS (FAT).

Since, I have formatted it using RMPrepUSB to FAT32 and I left all other settings default so I assume that was correct. I have factory reset the unit by powering on with finger held on bottom right of screen.

The first hurdle is that it doesn't get found in Garmin Express. I know the computer sees the device because when I connect it to the computer the SatNav shows the connected to computer display and in the Device Manager on the computer a 'MTP USB Device' appears so it is definitely connected. I've tried another cable but get the same so I know it's not the cable.
I've tried connecting the SatNav to Garmin Express on a Mac computer and then just in case there was something wrong I have now switched to a Windows 10 computer so it can't be the computer.
I've tried with the SD Card in the device and out of the device.

Any idea what I can try? Maybe it's to do with the formatting?

That's showing it connected to the PC for sure, but it usually should only be shown in Device Manager in preboot mode as a Garmin Device. Whether in MTP or MSM it should be visible to GarminExpress, that's strange because it's clearly in MTP as shown by the gold PC tower icon. It's description as "MTP USB Device" in Device Manager is not normal and means something is off here. Check that you followed the settings for RMPrepUSB as shown in initial post of [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], do the format again if unsure. Also, try to set it to MSM [not single session] as shown in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] then see how it appears to GE and Device Manager.

I've re-formatted as I didn't have MS-DOS Bootable selected. When I connect now with setting 'MTP Auto Detect' instead of 'MTP USB Device' in the Device Manager it says 'BMW Motorrad Navigator V' which is progress.

But it is still not found in Garmin Express...

If I set the device to Mass Storage as per your link I assumed it will just set the drive as a USB storage device. I didn't think it was recognised by Garmin Express in this mode but I will try and report back.

OMG, it connected to Garmin Express... which said there was a software update available and installed 3.4. This appears to have installed a couple of folders in the system drive (Garmin and GPX) that I just re-formatted.

There were way more folders in this system drive prior to me formatting it with folders named Help, Text, Vehicle, Voice and many more. I only remember these folders as I was told to remove some non-english files in these folders to free up space.

Currently the device doesn't seem to be acquiring satellites so as Garmin Express had an option to re-install maps, I thought I'd go ahead and do this. I'll update shortly.

Make sure to clear the non-volatile memory: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. This device may need to clear rubbish data in its non-vol region to operate correctly.

GE should offer you all available language files as well as other missing ones such as the detail map entitlement. Click on the device in GE when connected, then select Tools & Content > Utilities > (then below Optional Updates) select "Language Files" and "Other Files". You should be able to select then what you need. Make sure you've cleared Non-vol and rebooted a couple of times before you connect to GE. If it doesn't supply the voice, text, keyboard etc files, try WebUpdater:

I'm very happy to report back that my BMW Motorrad Navigator V is fully operational again and I can't thank you enough Butters.

Just in case anyone else goes through this I'll provide some info below:

I formatted the BMW Motorrad Navigator V 'Internal Storage' instead of the SD Card using the Garmin support article on my MAC which formatted it to the wrong settings.
This meant that when the device was connected to my Windows10 computer it registered in the Device Manager as 'MTP USB Device' under Portable Devices.

I put the SatNav into Mass Storage mode as follows:
- At the 'Where To' screen press Volume.
- Press and hold top right of display for 5-7 seconds until menu appears.
- Scroll down to MTP Settings.
- Select Mass Storage and Save.

I removed the SD Card from the device and used RMPrepUSB to re-format the Internal Storage using the following settings:
- Partition Size: MAX
- Volume Label: GARMIN
- MS-DOS bootable [IO.SYS] (CC3 and CC4DOSUFD)
- FAT32
- BOOT as FDD (A: no MBR)
Nothing else was selected/ticked.

After formatting I disconnected / reconnected SatNav and it registered in the Device Manager as 'BMW Motorrad Navigator V' instead of 'MTP USB Device' so I guess that is the indicator that you have formatted the Internal Storage correctly. However it still wasn't recognised by Garmin Express. I think at this point I tried a factory reset but I'm not sure I needed to but this is done as follows:
- Turn device off.
- Press and hold bottom right of display and turn device on. 'System' will appear on the screen but keep holding down until you see 'Loading'.

Device still wasn't recognised by Garmin Express but when I connected the device to my computer the computer image was orange. I disconnected device and restarted and then set the device to Mass Storage again as above and then reconnected to computer and now the computer image on the device was white.

When I loaded Garmin Express it recognised my device. I then loaded the United Kingdom Map and tested the device - worked fine.

I then formatted my SD Card (I did it outside of my device so I didn't mess up again but you should be able to do this with the SD Card in the device probably in Mass Storage Mode again. I formatted the SD Card using RMPrepUSB again but slightly differently from the Internal Storage:
- Partition Size: MAX
- Volume Label: SD_Card
- MS-DOS bootable [IO.SYS] (CC3 and CC4DOSUFD)
- FAT32
Nothing else was selected/ticked.

At this point I done another factory reset to make sure the device was back to defaults and connected to Garmin Express and installed maps 'Full Coverage of Europe 2020.10'.
After Maps installed I clicked on 'Tools & Content' in Garmin Express and clicked Utilities TAB, Then Language Files and installed what I needed. Then I clicked on 'Other Files' and installed everything I required.

Everything back and working.

Great outcome!

Did you remember to install a basemap as per Post #2? If you didn't the device may appear to operate and navigate correctly but will occasionally freeze or reboot randomly if scrolling the map at certain zoom levels or even when navigating in some regions.

I've clicked on the basemap link but I don't understand what I'm supposed to do. From searching it appears that I need a file called gmapbmap.img and I need to upload it to drive:/garmin/ but I don't know where to get the file.
I live in the UK so do I upload a basemap for that? The whole reason I formatted the Internal System was because the SatNav didn't work when I got to France so do I need a basemap for France / Europe? How do I get the file as I cannot see a link?
