Stand alone GPS is my favorite and Garmin is by far the best. Long time ago I had Magellan, which wasn't bad but it's no match to Garmin. What I like about the Garmin that you can have a lot of tweaks and customization's.
If you take your time, you can buy very cheap on ebay.
Also any phone software no match to Garmin GPS. With Garmin you have strong mount on the dash, steady power, satellite, traffic, speed and red light camera alert.
I heard that Garmin sales are down because mobile phone competition, but I don't plan to ditch it any time soon.

    Default Favorite navigation SW

I think iGO is the best of navigation sw known to me.
But sometimes I use Waze because of actual traffic situation.

Yes , I also think that Magic Earth (new name of the Route 66 Software) has become a very good navigation app on android.

Pro: - free program (without ads ) and free maps (OSM)
    - good route calculation (with alternative routes , lane guidance and free speedcams)
    - the only free software I know with (free) headup display , warning when you leave the white line and adaptive asssistant (collision warning when You come to close to the car
    in front of You)
    - easy import (one click) of custom poi (kml format)
    - modern interface
    - dashcam (with recording possible)

Contra: -You can't import routes yet

I would notbe so sure. If you do not travel on long distance, I think that Google maps is a better alternative

Why? Waze also let you know about the Police alerts and traffic
