My best guess would be that a previous firmware update attempt was interrupted in some way. You can see how that's possible yourself by watching the verbose output from Updater.exe, the existing software is erased and the 'new' software is then loaded. Any number of things can go wrong, a dropped USB connection due to a dodgy cable or a loss of power etc.. Result can be an erased rgn14 or an incomplete firmware loaded to it and regardless of the reason the outcome is the device can't boot and displays 'system software missing' message. Garmin calls it's operating firmware 'software' which it is of course. Usually very easily fixed by a successful re-flash with an appropriate RGN file because it's already in preboot. Many other so-called 'brickings' aren't so easily fixed however. Good outcome for you, well done.
