Do not erase the basemap in region 3, you will cause problems and it won't free up space in region 49 where the primary detail map is stored. As said, read the initial post carefully, it gives the correct procedure to send a new map to region 49 using Garmin's WebUpdater program via a batch file command. The new detail map will overwrite an existing map. If you want to check that your new map img file will fit, you can dump rgn49 with GPSDaemon which will not only give you a copy of the existing map but also let you see the available space in the region, reportedly ~1.75GB for 278 as per Post #1.
