'There are no USB devices available' message from updater.exe means you haven't put the unit into pre-boot mode successfully. Hold the LH top corner and then plug the mini usb into the unit. First have updater.exe open on your desktop with the dot beside 'USB Device', with the usb lead connected to the PC already.
It may be that the unit has V2.50 fw: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. V2.50 was withdrawn because it was faulty and you can fix your 40 by upgrading to a later (or downgrading to an earlier) fw as an .rgn file flashed using updater.exe in pre-boot mode without having to cure it with Cure3. If you're not sure what version, do the cure as dasilvarsa suggested though.
