I would like to note the following:

In many descriptions it says that you should hold a finger on a certain, device-dependent position of the display and then start the device to reach the pre-boot mode.

With my device 2599LMT-D this is different.

If I hold my finger in the upper left corner of the device and then start the device automatically by connecting it to the PC via USB cable, nothing happens.

I have to connect the device via USB cable to the PC, wait until the Garmin lettering appears, and only then put my finger on the upper left corner of the display (directly above the "G" from Garmin works too, by the way!) and hold it there.

Have others also observed this as well?

I had this - my 2599LMT-D has gotten "soft" (I hope) bricked. General rule of thumb:
A unit is soft -bricked if you can still enter the boot-loader and get responses when navigating/interacting with the unit.

A unit is hard-bricked if the boot-loader cannot be activated, or if it totally is non-responsive.
