The *.srx and *.asr files you have in the ASR folder of .system are map specific files and need not remain in the nuvi's memory. The .asr & .srx files can be shifted to a microSD to make space if you want. The path is sd:/Garmin/ASR.

The other files (*.srd) are language/dialect files and must remain there for a specific ASR to work. For instance if you have Italiano_.srd in the nuvi's .system/ASR folder you can use Italian ASR with the correct voice file present. Otherwise it just won't work. Even with EN there are dialects, e.g. British, American, Australian.

Chkdsk remove or add some files in wrong place, only format help to nuvi work again.
My almost brand new 3590 had messed up files when purchased. Reformatted it with prepusb which saved a lot of grief. I believe Loly is right about not using chkdsk. Best advice is don't run it, but if that's been done and has messed the nuvi up then you can recover it by correctly reformatting using prepusb. Sometimes Windows insists on running chkdsk, but if there's no errors then there's no repercussions as dasilvarsa points out.
