I don't like those symptoms... It looks like the firmware starts but crashes somewhere and it could take tons of time to find out the exact problem and patch it.

So just to confirm, there is no solution to the accuracy problem besides going back to original 37xx firmware?
I have about 100 units 3760 and all of them will be reprogrammed in 3490. you can test everything, but cautiously, because Replace Memory absolutely no interest to me and my boss.
try to flash in conjunction with the native bootloader on older firmware versions that are relevant in November 2011.

Hmm.. interesting. Can the garmin or distributors are doing the same, ie, reprogramming of stranded stocks of 37xx to 3490? Find really very likely. I have in hand a 3490, new, newly-acquired in a forgotten country in South America, which has a peculiarity: it only has 2 GB of internal memory (V7 2 GB TC DS 036 GTL), being new and not refurbished (ID 385...). Another curiosity that makes me think being a 37xx reprogrammed is being able to get in 3 different ways of pre-boot: pressing the top left corner of the screen, when it appears the Garmin logo, exactly as in the 37xx, or pressed ON or ABOVE the Garmin logo G (can someone confirm if the 3 method also occurs in the 3490 previous?). In the 3790 are 2 methods: pressing the top left corner of the screen or above of the G of the Garmin logo. From what I remember, in 3490 firmware only if enters in pre-boot by pressing up ON the letter G when appears the logo on the screen. A nothing sophisticated method to be more certain would be to open the unit and check which processor is used. Finally, at least the accuracy is impeccable, really great, similar to 3790 with original fw...
We can not deny: Garmin know how to do a good job reprogramming of unsold units aground![]()

It depends on country which memory size you get. (Depending on the size of preloaded Maps)
South Africa and Australia only gets 2GB units as well. (Small Maps)
Europe gets =>4 GB because of Large Map.
3490's are not Refurbished 3790's
If you open both you will see differences.
Different GPS/Bluetooth Chipsets.

The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.
Albert Einstein.
I only need to flash slightly patched fw_all.bin (infinite loops and forced reboots to bootloader will be inserted), nothing else. It's not dangerous.
Tomorrow from 11 am GMT+2 I'm ready![]()

Hello Neil! Great to know about these possibilities. It would be interesting to have some information about the accuracy of gps in the 2 conversion methods. By chance you came to compare them? If we make an analogy with the 3790 converted with full 3490 fw, which resulted in considerable inacuracy, we can assume the same with 2460 to 560? If the precision of the first method is higher, appear to be a strong indicator that the boot drivers are crucial in precision and that the same principle must be valid for the 3790 converted to 3490. Would miss only get operationalize the process with these firwmares ..

Nice idea Angelo! Unfortunately i only have one 2460/560 to play with so i can't do side-by-side tests as i did with 37>3790 convert and original 3790.
But i'll see what results i can get with rough testing. Stand by, might be a little while as i'll have to convert back and forth several times.![]()

To be precise, that FML P/N is stored in NAND area which doesn't belong to any region (there is a gap in the region layout), just before the region 0x30.
So I had to modify the region layout in boot.bin and make the previous region cover FML P/N area, so that it could be read/written with update.txt.
