    Hi Lolypop,

well despite all the signs looking good, the Nuvi still won't boot. Stays fixed on Garmin logo. Connects fine to the PC and is recognised, but away from the PC it just won't boot. Have tried the updater/garmincure to no avail.

Looks like it is time for a new unit.

Thank you very much for the backup anyway.

    best regards
    Leigh

    @rosbif
Can you ever see the garmin as a flash drive on your computer ?

Yes, all that is fine. So whilst I can copy the files over, the unit refuses to go past the start up logo (when not connected to PC). No loading maps nothing. When it is connected to PC it stays on the logo but I can see the internal drive and all the files. I'm missing the gmapproc.img file, so I think that might be the underlying cause. But what do I know, I'm a network guy! I tried removing the XML entry referring to the gmapproc file, also I tried substituting the gmapsupp.img that was located in the Map folder for the gmapproc.img file in the .system folder. But nothing, hangs on the logo. The unit had already been difficult to boot into before I tried the format route (in a reboot loop at loading maps stage). I was hoping it may have been a damaged file, so that was why I copied all the files (bar the bl**dy .system folder) and formatted.

From what I can see in the GarminDevice.XML file I am missing the gmapproc.img file only now.

Running out of patience, and time. It needs to be up and running by the weekend really. I'm about to call it, and throw it.

Nuvi 13xx can start even without these files. Garmin device.xml is recreated every time you boot your nuvi.
Use Garmin cure by kunix posted in sticky thread

I think that you need to flash FIRMWARE now.
It seem that you are still running the CURE (non bootable firmware)
Go back to Garmincure3 and Flash firmware. As Caty says above the 13xx can boot even if you have not a single file.
I did it today (Booted a 1300 with a blank but correctly formatted hard drive). It creates the needed files by itself.
Use the button on the right hand side that says ORIGINAL and make and flash original firmware.
Another way to do it is to get an older version (5.40) or (5.10) and copy the GUPDATE.GCD file to the /.system folder
(it must not be the same version that you used to make the cure if you use the gupdate.gcd method)

    Also look at this post.

Hi, I wondered that after your mail. So I tried again from scratch, using the Original option, but still nothing. I reckon the unit is shot. Will purchase something else!

thank you all for your help.

OK, I may have spoken too soon. I reformated the Garmin using the tool discussed here:

as mentioned by dasilvarsa. And what do you know. It rebooted. Sweet.

thanks again to all those who helped me out of this hole.

    Well Done Rosbif.
I was hoping that you would fix it.
I think that your original problem was that your nuvi drive was corrupt.
The Procedure for others (Nuvi 13xx and 14xx) should be something like this. (use Windows XP, not MAC)

1 Run GarminCure3 in Cure Mode to be able to access the internal drive.
2 Backup as many files as possible, not forgetting the hidden /.system folder to your PC.
3 Format the nuvi drive using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] as a reference.
4 Run GarminCure3 in Original Mode.
5 The Nuvi Should now boot Run Webupdater.
