more infos how to get easily preboot, pictures and instructions about Updater usage here
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
2 things are important for success:

1 Before doing anything Drag&Drop the rgn file you want to flash to your device in Updater.exe and it will open in your desktop.
2 The appropriate .rgn file must be in the same directory as the updater.exe.

My PC recognizes the nuvi. When I attach it to the Windows XP PC, the nuvi appears in my system as an F Garmin drive and the SD slot as G Garmin drive if there is an SD in the slot or not.

I am at work now so I can't use the boss's computer for downlowding, formatting, etc. but I previously formatted the nuvi with RMPrepUSB with these settings: Max/GARMIN/Set part as non bootable/MS DOS Bootable/Boot as FDD/Fat 32. I did the same thing to my SD card as well. After I used GarminCure3 and formatted my nuvi, I have never again been able to get the PC to recognize it as a Garmin. In the Hardware System Manager or whatever it is called, the nuvi appeared as a Garmin device prior tot GarminCure3 (when I could get the computer to recognize it at all - I was having firmware issues prior to all of this, obviously). Now it appears as a secondary device or something (I can't remember specifcally).

I've made multiple attempts at holding the power button while simultaneously pressing the upper left corner of the screen and plugging in the USB cable (it would be easier if I had a third hand). But it seems like the nuvi is not recognizing the pre-boot attempts.

    Normal because you loaded cure.

    Correct

Have you dragged original .rgn in updater.exe ? Try this: shutdown Nuvi, attach it USB, it will start by itself and you wont have to press ON button, but just immediately before it starts hold on your finger on upper left corner.
If you loaded the .rgn in Updater and ticked USB ,you'll get for some seconds you nuvi model in Updater, this is the moment to hit ok.
Try and retry, this is the only way to revive your nuvi.

I will try the .rgn drag and drop suggestion when I get home.

I am beginning to suspect that my touchscreen is not sensing my finger press or not properly processing said finger press. The touchscreen was working to put me in this state but now it is not. Or the device is not properly sensing the power button; it turns on the device but doesn't power it off no matter how long I hold it in position. So there is something awry that is preventing me from executing a pre-boot.

The switch physically works. I can turn the device on from when it is off. But then, for whatever reason, the device does not recognize when the switch is depressed again.

Yes, update.txt won't work. I thought it's quite obvious. As far as I remember GarminCure3-ed firmware doesn't even read a single file. That's why it helps when we a completely screwed up partition.

Up until a week ago I didn't even know about pre-booting Garmins. What does it actually do to the device and how does the GarminCure3 aid in recovering a corrupted device?

Kunix invented it so he would better explain, but in brief Cure3 is a 'stripped-down' fw which does not load map image files, voice files etc. This allows you to access the internal file system to reformat or to delete any corrupt file/s which cannot be loaded and therefore are preventing the unit from booting. The cure fw cannot boot the unit, merely allows it to be accessed for that purpose. The original full fw must then be loaded in pre-boot to complete that process and finally fresh necessary files are added.

Loly's question is valid, the method you used to access pre-boot for loading the cure should still work after it's been loaded.
