Yes, a proper detail map is definitely required for proper operation of the device.
Although very old now, the StreetPilot 27x0 series are reliable, robust and waterproof so are still ideal for MC/ATV use.
Real quick question.....
Is the primary Garmin map needed for the unit to operate properly? For example, i was planning on installing OSM detail maps exclusively on the unit and want to utilize the full 1.7GB.
Thanks

So, to confirm, the primary map that came pre-installed in region 50 and utilizes about 1GB of the 1.7 must be present on the unit for it to function? Or can I reflash it and use only a new detail map that is uploaded via Mapsource - therefore having the full 1.7 GB for the detail map?
As things currently stand I only have the usual 700-800mb available for detail maps - and I am want to use the 1.7 for detail maps.
Does that question make sense?
Thanks for taking the time to respond to me.
No, i think we're at cross-purpose because i misunderstood your initial question. The *official* Garmin original detail map doesn't need to be present, only *a* working detail map in recognized Garmin format (which OSM is).
If you replace the present map with appropriate OSM data all will be fine.

Just a little more info about map regions on 27x0 devices. There are 4 of them as far as i recall:
region 3 (hex 0x03) for the basemap;
region 10 (hex 0x0A) for a supplementary map otherwise known as gmapsupp.img;
region 49 (hex 0x31) for the original factory entitlement detail map otherwise known as gmapprom.img;
and finally
region 50 (hex 0x32) for a (sometimes) factory-loaded small info map otherwise known as gmapoem.img.
Note that gmapoem.img is not always present in rgn50 and if it is, it's meant for dealer location POIs in branded devices Garmin makes for BMW, HD, Honda etc.. In any case, rgn50 usually has a quite small space allocation although it actually shares space with rgn49 so removing an OEM map makes a little more available for a primary PROM detail map. However, rgn10 has its own dedicated space for a secondary SUPP detail map. The region-layout does differ in these older non-MSM devices like SP and GPSMAP devices however and i'm going from memory about 27x0. Regardless, i don't think you'll have enough space on your 2720 allocated to rgn50 to flash a detail map of any size and a new primary detail map will need to be flashed to rgn49.

Thanks - I had my regions wrong...This all makes sense. Now another question, do you have any idea where I can get/purchase the Garmin City Navigator 20.22.25 version? From what I have researched that is the last version that used all capital letters for the street names. The versions with the combination of Caps and small letters do not resolve correctly on the SP. They appear as M... S..... (Main Street). Unless you are aware of some type of fix for this. Other than that the SP is a great unit for the motorcycle which is why I picked one up for $19.00 for the entire package including original box and original accessories. Can't beat that IMHO thanks again!
Not sure which map version you mean by "20.23.25" as Garmin's naming convention is, for example, "City Navigator North America NT Version 2025.10". I'm not aware of a problem with street name rendering being problematic on SPs unless in all capitals in CN maps .... but imo that's just another reason for using OSM on these devices now. I have a 2720 with an LM subscription but because of the hoops Garmin makes us jump thru i don't even bother trying to *update it with CN maps anymore. OSM is easier and they are just as accurate for day-to-day road use afaik. SP devices can't use all the Garmin distracting eye-candy extras such as JCV anyway, the lack of that isn't a negative on a MC anyway imho.
*GarminExpress connects to devices in Mass Storage Mode (MSM) only, same as how Windows File Explorer sees them. SP 2xx0 and related devices connect to a computer in Garmin Mode which is why they aren't seen by GE or Explorer. Garmin Mode is similar to the preboot mode in modern devices, those modes only show limited information under Device Manager (as "GARMIN Devices"), so can't be 'browsed'. There are "ways" to get around all that but as i said it's not worth the trouble especially for everyday uses without deep technical knowledge of how to flash maps to non-MSM (aka region-only) devices. Such discussion here is barely allowed however, because it skirts the forum's rules on not posting anything contrary to Garmin EULAs.
If you're determined to use a CN i'll help you once you locate the GMAP folder (PC installation) for the required version, but i can only tell you how to do it but not actively supply files or use tools for converting to a usable IMG file for you.

My bad there - I meant version 2022.25. Is there an OSM mapping developer that you recommend? But yes if you could direct me to how to obtain the required version it would be good to know.
Thanks!
For NT NA 2022.25 you'll just have to search for an active download or torrent. Look for the GMAP version as i previously mentioned, that way you can send partial data to your SP because it won't have enough space to load even full Lower 48. It'll need to be fully unlocked, not just unlocked for MapSource/MapInstall.
For OSM, go to the official site and follow the guides there to download the data you want for NA. File size should be smaller than the equivalent NT areas:

Actually I found the file and have it on my pc as gmapsupp.img file. At the point where I could use guidance as to creating the exe file that will add it to mapsource... or something to that effect..thanks
