If it's a PARTIAL NA image file that's less in size than the available space on your SP then you can send it using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] via command line: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. If loading to rgn49 use "gmapprom.img" naming. If rgn10 it's "gmapsupp.img".

If it's a FULL NA/Lower48 then it'll be too big to fit as I think you're correct saying that your 2720 is limited to ~1.7 GiB (that's Gibibytes i.e. binary, not Gigabytes i.e. decimal), so it should have ~1,825,360,000 Bytes probably. You can check the size of a region and dump its content using the method described in this [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

It's also possible to send an appropriately sized IMG as an RGN file using Updater.exe, as explained [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Or you can use old programs like [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

So, there are several ways to load an IMG file to your SP provided space allows but none of them are as easy as using the PC Install files/GMAP folder. That's because you can simply select map tiles up to the appropriate size and transfer using MapSource or MapInstall, but you can't load an already-compiled IMG file that way.

Note that whether using PC install or IMG transfer that the files must either be fully unlocked or you must embed a 25-character UNL code.

Can offer any further advice on using this method? I was thinking Sendmap - and I tried working with it but was not able to create the install file to load the map into Mapsource. Or am I way off here....?

Yes, you are on the wrong track about SendMap. It sends an already fully compiled IMG file to a device. Read this: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Basically it simply sends an IMG to the device, just as previously described for the other methods, i.e. by command line using WebUpdater, or flashed directly by Updater.exe to a region using an RGN file.

The official Garmin programs, MapSource and MapInstall, both use mapping data previously installed on your computer (i.e. from a GMAP folder/PC Install Files) to select parts (i.e. map 'tiles') from that data to be then sent as an IMG which the program compiles 'on-the-fly'.

This is what I am attempting to accomlish. I want to build the PC install exe file that will load my gmapsupp.img file into Mapsource in the same manner the garmin install dvd would do it - if I had it. Does that make sense? Thanks for the help

Then as Neil said in both Posts 7 & 9, you need to find a GMAP folder for the 2022.25 City Navigator. There's no EXE files used by Garmin any more, that method finished many years ago for loading install data to a PC for CN mapping.

Maybe you're still a little unsure about all this, so to be absolutely 100% clear - there's no way to directly load parts of an existing IMG file by using any official Garmin software like MapSource or MapInstall. They only use install data from the PC's ProgramData/Garmin folder, stored in a *.gmap folder.

It's not feasible, albeit technically possible, to reverse-engineer an IMG file because the result will not contain routing data so it would be useless for navigation other than as a moving-map situation to keep track of your location.

I understand now - I need what I looked all over for but could not find.......the Unobtanium Folder that contains

    .mdx
    .trf
    .typ
    product1 folder

    etc....

I had a hard enough time finding the gmapsupp.img file looks like I am SOL trying to do it the way I tried.
    thanks for your help fellas.

I still think your initial idea of loading OSM mapping is the best and easiest solution. The OSM link is in Post #9, just follow the download guide.

If you are absolutely determined to load a partial NA from a GMAP folder then look for "City_Navigator_North_America_NT_2022_25.gmap" (it looks like a file name but it's a folder). The size is getting up near 4.5 GiB so not many, if any, download links would still be active after 4 years. If you really, REALLY want it then send me a PM and I'll help you find the folder, but it'll be more like just shoving you in the right direction and not actively assisting with the actual loading process.
