    Regarding the torrent of #4, another warning. I updated my Montana to firmware 5.60, and now the map is locked ("Can't Authenticate Maps"). It is still unlocked for BaseCamp. The Oregon's have new firmware released today as well, so they might get the same issue.

    I think the biggest warning for the torrent in Post #4 is that it's unneccessarily HUGE! It contains every thing but the kitchen sink. Both unlocked and locked images [why?] as well as the full PC install, and some ancillary files for various units [but no ASR] and a couple of unlockers in the misnomer 'Cure' folder:

    Downloading ~14GiB makes no sense when you can get the unit specific files here in this thread and combine them with the map whether img or gmap well under 6GiB for the most advanced units or much less for junior units.

    @rquick
    Probably you just need to properly unlock the image with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. BaseCamp can see even locked images provided the MS Flag is set '0' not '1', or if you're referring to the gmap folder unlock it with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

    Torrent users have advantage to uncheck unwanted files/directories, whereas often it is not possible here - with [multipart] archives of unknown content. F.e. 10M archive of unlocked cyclops (POI) whereas in fact both locked and unlocked sets take together less than 1.7M being packed properly.

    LOL, i'm well-aware of the ability to uncheck what's not required, although the selective quote in your post above makes it appear otherwise. See the pic i posted in Post #49, but ppl unfamiliar with that screen may not wait until the metadata's downloaded and just click ok. The torrent also contains selective ancillary files but not all and reportedly may have the ultimate noob error of images with the flag still [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

    OT on:
    I'm not a 'torrent-hater' sbog. I'm neutral about them and simply won't use them if other more secure download sources are available. You and others here are perhaps aware of the dangers of being tracked and use a proxy in your torrent client Preference Settings, uninformed others may not know that either. Comparing the risk and inconvenience of a 10MiB dl from a host site to a 13.8GiB one from an easily-tracked torrent is not a fair comparison either. If you wish to make further comment on the relative merits of torrents compared to hosters please either PM me or better still post in a relevant sub-forum so that all users are able to express their views and air their preferences and reasons for any 'prejudices'. I'm acutely aware that 'torrent-lovers' are fiercely defensive and take any perceived criticism to heart.
    Let's not have 'lightning strike twice' in the same thread my friend. OT off.

    The reason for screen gets dark is night time for Europe to opposite daylight in your location probably!
    JCV does not reduce speed of device because it is point features and be reading only on junctions. If you Nuvi gets slow you can try to serve the internal memory - check for errors plus defrag and optimize also. Be careful!
    Garmin, how much is 30 pieces of silver for Judas today? Were they worthy for crucifix of GPSPower?

    Of course you know that very much more than me! But I'm in doubt; in that case I always reinstall the firmware, never defrag and optimize because I believed that not serve to the Garmin data format... In last case defrag and optimize? Can Giomen or someone explain it better, please!

    The GMA and UNL files 'tie' the map to a certain unit, or indeed several units which are entitled to the map thus allowing the entire map or certain portions of it to be loaded from your PC to the qualifying unit via MapInstall. As you've found, without both sets of files the map would be useless on your unit [unless then unlocked with an unlocker e.g. gimgunlock to remove the GMA proctection]. The unl and gma files actually serve quite different functions, but their lack results in effectively the same result. I'm of this opinion Pungente: If hard reset/clear NV/reinstall fw/correct reformat doesn't resolve the problem then, and only then as an absolute last resort, go further and defrag etc. This is because imo defraging flash drives does not have the same value as defragging mechanical hard disc drives because the two types work quite differently. Defragging a HDD can only benefit it because by rearranging the data so it is more easily found and thus reduces the time involved in seek heads jumping hither and yon to find it. Flash drives actually place data in different places quite intentionally to enable 'wear levelling' to occur so that as much of the available space is used as often as possible. Unnecessary reformatting 'uses up' this wear levelling and hence the remaining effective life of the drive. Defragging probably has a similar and even more dramatic effect. I believe that's why Giomen added the emphatic 'Be careful!'.

    This is an interesting subject, however if it continues here I'll spin it off to another thread. I'm not an expert in this field and the above is a layman's view and opinion.
