Short answer: Limited EL, no METRA, but the whole setup was surprisingly buggy

I finally confiscated one of the family GPS's long enough to look at this.
As it happened the GPS had CN NA 2014.10 loaded - an unlocked IMG from here.

I couldn't get either the full CX or small CX img to work properly with it -- CX was recognized ('Powered by CityXplorer"), but calculating a Public Transportation route invariably hung up, freezing at 60-80%.

Eventually I installed a new img, built with MapInstall from the CN NA gmap.

The full CX wasn't recognized, but the small CX was - and worked.

Buses worked well, but not trains.
I disabled buses and tried routes from Evanston to the Loop.
It only used the Red Line from Berwyn south (about 5 miles from city center) -- It suggested walking 5 miles south to Berwyn, then catching the EL :-)

I never got it to use METRA.
