Thanks Dasil. It makes sense once i had a chance to think about it and I was just stuck in a rut. The naming convention is a carry over from the pre-3xxx days when the MMR parts could be left with the original FID and you needed separate unlock files for different FID CXs. I've been used to following the convention for identification anyway, but of course as 800 is the common FID for modded CX regardless of whether it's NA, EU, AU etc only one valid unlock file is necessary to unlock all MMR parts.

@capn: Thanks for the effort, but not to the point where, were I you, I'd trust me to get the PRC25 back up and running after being hacked by Charles (please excuse the obscure Viet Nam metaphor). As an example, Chicago is listed as part of the NT set AND the MMR set. I am learning thanks to the patience of many; just not as quickly as I'd like and never to the point where I would desire...This lock/unlock data is not as easy as duck soup!

Firstly, there are two 'types' of hacked/modified cityXplorer maps available in Post #1, the full CX [Standalone, so needs no separate CN loaded] and the small CX [no CN content] which must be used with a CN of the same version. Then there is yet another 'type', the official CX sold by Garmin which are available as individual maps for just one city. They are available in the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] also, but some haven't had the MMR components changed to FID 800, and because that original FID remains they are useless for Enhanced Pedestrian use in 37x0 and later devices [2011>]. Some of the original type such as Amsterdam have both versions, with FID 2419 unchanged for MMR, and the modded one with MMR FID 800.
Starting to get it?
Now, look at the GMapTool log in Post #4 for all the NA cities [Full/Standalone]. The individual cities have been combined into one big map, the NT [normal CN map] components have been unlocked and the MMR [EPM components] have had their FID changed to 800 so that with an appropriate unlock file they will work in all units supporting EPM including 37x0> devices.
Look at the second GMapTool log in Post #8. It shows the Small version which has no CN NT parts so must be teamed with the same version of the NA CityNavigator map to work, and again the MMR parts have had their FID changed to 800.
Finally, look at the 1st log in Post #8, it shows an official untouched version of London, all FIDs including the MMR are still 2969.
So, everything starts of course with the original single city official CXs.
Now, in summary if you've now got you head around things: Think of the standalone CXs as having 2 main 'bits': (i) CN NT which can be unlocked by an unlocker and (ii) MMR EPM which can only be unlocked for a particular device by a valid unlock code in a *.unl file whether that's the original FID or 800.

To take a short detour back to basics, because if you're confused as to the basics Neil's in-depth explanations will just continue to befuddle
Think of the City Explorer enhanced pedestrian data (the MMR data) as an overlay -- the bus routes aren't much use without an underlying street map to put them in context.
The CX (small) is just the overlays - the MMR data. It requires the matching street map (City Navigator) to be of any use (or even function).
The CX (full) is both the overlays and the underlying street map (taken from CN).
So in the CX (full) you're working with there is an NT section for Chicago -- that's the same piece of street map that City Navigator uses to show Chicago.
Then there's also an MMR section for Chicago -- that's the enhanced pedestrian mode data for Chicago, useless without the underlying (and matching) street map (NT section).
That's why Chicago is listed twice -- you have both the Chicago street map (NT) and the Chicago pedestrian data (MMR), and both are needed for the pedestrian data to be used.
Hopefully that will help put the unlocking requirements and the difference between CN, CX-small, and CX-full in a better context.
@capn
Post 8 explained it fully for me. The other explanations above by both you and Neil are just saying the same things but in different words as far as I can tell. Simple really, the basics:
1) Full Standalone CX doesn't need a separate City Navigator on the nuvi but a Small CX does
2) Enhanced Pedestrian Mode only works if the MMR has an unlock code because it can't be unlocked any other way
That's the "Must Knows/Should Knows"... the rest is "Could Knows" or "Who Gives A Toss" so if a user understands 1 & 2 the rest is just fancy footwork......
Do you mean will CX maps work in StreetPilot for iPhone? Certainly 'Urban Guidance' will work, which has cityXplorer features but it's an in-app purchase:

I really enjoyed these CX maps for planning trips into the city in New York and Boston. Has anyone been able to get the CityXplorers to work after doing the map 2015.1 map update ? I can only get this to work if no maps newer than 2014.10 were loaded on the GPS. Any workaround for this issue with newer maps?
