The img file I downloaded (such as 2014.10 in the original post of this thread) was already unlocked so I don't think that is still necessary. Anyway, I also tried running gimgunlock on it again but it did not change the original img file (e.g., md5sum is still the same after running gimgunlock).

ok do does anyone know what else i need to get my gm xt to use the newer maps (or if it is even possible)? if i replace with the newer map and unl, my gm xt only recognizes the base map. also i noticed that jetmouse tool keeps outputting diff codes if i just keep pressing the generate button and without changing the unit id... are all those codes valid?

You are really in the wrong forum
    Try
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

As the garmin maps for smartphones are probably different. Try some searches on the internet.....

This is from an internet search for instance - this implies you use Mapsource as the tool -

How do you add maps to Garmin Mobile XT?
I downloaded garmin mobile XT v4.20.30 for my X1 and unlocked it with the keygen. Then I downloaded the City Navigator Middle East NT 2010 maps, and sent them to GMXT using the instructions in the readme file. Heres the readme file if it helps:

    - Start mapsource and connect GPS unit
Go to Utilities -> Get Unit ID -> Find Device
When 10 digit unit ID number appears click "copy" button.

    - Close mapsource and other programs

    - Install the new maps into map source using the included executable:
    \IMG\CNMENT2010Update_ENU.msi

    Select Install to <mapsource path e.g. c:\Garmin>

    - Launch garmin_kgen_v1.5.exe and paste your 10 digit GPS Unit ID
Select software product (Garmin Mobile PC)
    Select map product(custom mapset) FID=445
    Click both Generate buttons.
25-character (Software unlock code) and (Map unlock code) will appear.

    - Start UnlockWizard.exe from <mapsource path e.g. c:\Garmin>
Select option "Yes, I have a 25-charactor unlock code"
then option "I have a 25-character Unlock code" Next

copy and paste (Software unlock code) from Keygen to UnlockWizard. Do not register
Repeat step for (Map unlock code) from Keygen to UnlockWizard. Do not register

    - Start mapsource. The new 2010 maps should be shown.
Go to View ->Zoom out Region
    Go to Tools ->map
Make a selection Window of the complete map region(yellow area).
This will select all 10 map regions.
The Map tab should show (10 maps - 31.6 MB) in the bottom area.
Go to Transfer ->Send to Device
    Click "Send"
    Finish!!!!

NT maps are no problem and XT has no gma protection so you can unlock a locked image file with just a JM generated unlock code in a .unl file. But as Roger has pointed out, if the map is unlocked by gimgunlock or similar that unlock code is not needed. Check you've named the file correctly, XT cannot recognise 'anyname'.img. Try gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img as names and ensure the file size is under 2GiB. The maps go directly in the Garmin folder.
