Hi thanks for the input but basically all of the above I have tried. Ballebar thanks for the info re unlock it will come in handy will use it in some cases in the future.
I seem to have 2 differences which must be do do with why I am not getting public transport.
While all maps are present along with 3d and they work. When I go into "Navigation" I do have a"Pedestrian " mode but there is no mention of "powered by city explorer" as per the screen shot. Also i do not have a "Bicycle" option.
When I go into a simulated trip it does not give me the option "Public transit" Although I do have bus, train, underground selected and saved. So suggestions welcome. Unlock codes are fid 800 pid 1. If I run a trip scenario it just tells me to walk the entire distance. In Transportation mode the "Public Transport" Mode is NOT enabled. So one would assume a problem with the unlock code.

As a seperate issue how to get screensaver shots please, if I plug into computer it just goes into charger/update mode

I had the same problem of not showing EPM until I shut down my device (long pressing the power button) then powered on to reboot and reload the maps again. You may want to give it a try.

Ok further to the issue with the melbourne, sydney, brisbane, adelaide maps. I downloaded Paris and New York and they worked fine in EPM Mode. On the other hand ALL the Ausralia maps come up with "Unable to Unlock maps" this actually happened the first time I downloaded but I just automatically went ahead and unlocked with FIA 2.1. So it would seem to me as a novice tha in fact these maps HAVE NOT been modified to work with FID 800. I await the input of the experts.

You mustnt use unlocker with CXs maps, these Australian maps are exactly modded like Paris map and other ones posted here: I've checked them all.( you can see my screens in this thread) They need just the unlock code made for FID 800. (unlocked map with FIU = no EPM features).
    Try a simple *.unl
In your 37xx sd "Map" folder you must have only *.img and *.unl - Check if you have the right extension in *.unl.
"unable to unlock maps" comes if you havent create your *.unl file correctly or the name is wrong of you have an invalid extension. I cant guess any other valid reason.
To make a screenshot go to Tools/ Setting/Display/Screenshot/Enable- The button will appear in the right top corner.
After shot it, attach your gps usb (you should have on the screen this)

    PzfDH

browse to your nuvi and you'll find your screenshot in the "Screen " folder.

    Hi Caty,
Well getting there it seems I downloaded some of these maps from another thread about a week ago(now gone) and in fact they were not the corrected for 37xx so I have downloaded all the maps again and just changed the key in the existing *.unl files so now EPM mode is working. YES. BUt a funny thing happens now when I run test in simulate mode and click start it says calulating route gets to 100% then when i click transport mode and select public transport all goes well until I click start again it says (again) calculating route ---- unable to calulate route then message comes up GPS OFF. Since this is a problem post I will just slip in a quick thank you to all the respondents now as a seperate one is not allowed

Guys, As Catymag is aware i have spend days working on how to actually make cityxplorer work, I have suceeded , It is simple to make the maps work, but seems i still need to learn a bit more about how my 3790 works, i think its the design of sofware and what i expected is not quite what the programmers have done. So set that aside, it will work but you have to get used to the unit and you MUST spend time and know your unit.
As for the maps, it is SO simple onces you have achieved how its all done, I have had much problems as it is NOT explained in "simple" terms, if someone actually posted step by step (see my post in this thread)
This all you need to remember, 3790 does not need the names changed on maps EG: gmapsupp etc,
    1. Make a folder on you sd card called ...garmin make another called maps.
    2. generate a unl file with notepad and call it gmapsupp.unl....place this file in garmin folder
    3. Cityxplorer maps....DO NOT USE UNLOCKERS. the maps are unlocked, all you do is extract the Melbourne, sydney etc maps to the folder called ...maps. NO need to change map names..just extract and drag into map folder.
Remember you can place you sd card in your reader and drap drop.
    IT WORKS!
Place your card into garmin unit, reboot your unit, go to maps and you will see all the cityxplorer maps.
Paris and NY are different and seems nothing needs to be done, thats why it confuses us.
If you go to main screen on your unit, your aware the icon on top shows a picture of a car (normally) if you tap it a drop down screen comes on and YOU will see option for Car , Pedestrian and bicycle. It MUST show "powered by cityxplorer" under Pedestrian.
So, if you have all that, you have cityxplorer.
To test the cityxplorer, you need to pretend your in that city, so you must turn off the gps. Tools,settings,system..gps simulator must be turned off. You can try "where to" and dont forget when it asks your current loction place any point somewhere middle melbourne. What i have found is if you use the "trip planner" it sucks! When i choose from point A to end point B and press next it goes into keyboard screen??? but if you just type the end address it opens up proprerly for city navigation with bus stops etc. Its not what i thought i should do. If anyone knows whats with this please let me know.
Also it is bullshit that train stations are not easily found, try and find Flinders streed station or any in poi under transit there is nothing.. if you do a search somehow it is found with other options of same name, this is crap.
Maybe do simple test with cityxplorer starting from Melbourne international airport to end at crown casino using pedestrian mode and let us know.

    Melbourne Navteq example

    Ge1oh

All the cityxplorer maps posted here require an *.unl code made with MAPID 800 to show pedestrian mode and public transports, the cra ck is the same in every map in this thread- Paris and New York unlock works exactly in the same way than in Australian CXs.
The instructions are in post one by pop222 , may be you havent read them-

    Folder "maps"???
As described in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] the folders to use on a memory card are "Garmin" (put "gmapsupp.unl" here) and "Map" (put extra maps and CX maps here). Don't use "maps" as a folder name if you want your Garmin unit to find any *.img files in that folder.
All paths that the unit expects to use can be found in the "[GPS unit drive]:\Garmin\GarminDevice.xml" file.
For nüvi 37xx it's essential to use the special versions from this thread. Otherwise it's hard to circumvent the GMA certificate authentication if you don't have bought a download directly from Garmin.

What? Bullshit NOT easily found or bullshit easily found?
"it is bullshit that train stations are not easily found" (here you actually say that it's easy to find station POIs)
"try and find Flinders streed station or any in poi under transit there is nothing" (here you say that there's nothing to find)

Using "Where To?" / "Points of Interest" / "Transit" / "Ground Transportation":

    Here's an example with
    cityXplorer Melbourne 2012.10 Sensis:

    20tjztv
Gives an initial long walking distance at the airport.
Otherwise it connects to available public transportation hubs.
