Hmm. How did you flash the original V5.20 310 firmware to it? Clearly not in preboot? In Mass Storage Mode available did you put GUPDATE.GCD in Garmin folder and it flashed on next boot attempt after that? I need as much information as possible on how this device is behaving before going further. I assume Mass Storage Mode is no longer available either now?
