My reply to kunix's post #29 is in post #30.
I do not fully understand post #31. What is it exactly that I should do with the files in post #31?

Слава Україні!!!
My reply to kunix's post #29 is in post #30.

Okay, it's ready.
Unpack it to an empty SD card, so that 5.bin is located at SD:/5.bin.
Insert the SD card into the broken device.
And flash the RGN file using updater.exe in pre-boot mode.
If it works fine, your device would be visible as 14xx in pre-boot mode. And you would be able to use 14xx's boot.bin.
Let's cross our fingers and hope it works. Coz if it flashes only 5.bin or only 43.bin, your device would be completely killed most probably. Hardware repair would be needed.
Note, that boot.bin inside 082701000760-cure972.rar is patched to load update.txt and to allow flashing regions 5 and 43. Original boot.bin doesn't do that.Code:Please Login or Register to see the links
Alviora means that your problem can be solved by unsoldering the flash chip and flashing it with a dump from a healthy device. This is the hardware repair method I was talking above.

I realize there's only one way to do it right and many ways to do it wrong. So before I proceed, please confirm that my understanding of what I need to do is right:
1. Extract the RAR file.
2. Place the following contents in the root of an empty microSD:
3. Make sure bricked 1490 is switched off.
- Garmin\Updater\0827\update.txt *)
- file 5.bin
- file 43.bin
4. Place microSD in bricked 1490.
5. Drag & drop 082701000760.rgn onto Updater.exe.
6. In the Updater.exe window, select "USB Device".
7. Bring the bricked unit into pre-boot mode and click "OK" in the Updater.exe window.
*) update.txt contains following commands:
xrgn,5,1:/5.bin
xrgn,43,1:/43.bin
reboot
Did I understand things correctly?
Just out of interest... what's the difference between the xrgn and the rrgn command?

Yes, you understand it correctly.
rrgn writes region contents to file. xrgn writes file contents to region.
kunix...... YOU'VE JUST MADE MY WIFE HAPPY!!!!!
(and me too!)
The bricked unit is from my wife and has come back to life (my wife also, but the unit in particular...)! I executed the steps exactly as mentioned in post #34 and it flashed perfectly! It loaded the two *.bin files (telling by the two green progress bars at the very bottom of the GPS screen that flashed by) and about 15 seconds later it went into mass storage mode. Not wanting to spoil anything in this elevated state of excitement, I have left the unit in this mode but removed the microSD.
Anything I need to do before disconnecting it from the PC? Do I use WebUpdater to load FW in it? Please advise.
I'm so glad it worked
The fact that it was able to boot up to the mass storage means that 972's bootloader has successfully executed 972's fw_all. So your device should be healthy.
You don't need to do anything. Just let it boot.
Also did you notice that post #35 in this thread was my post number 666? So your unit was cured using a bit of devil's magic! Now it's possessed!![]()

This has been a great learning experience for all involved (me in particular!) and could also be of help to others that may end up in a similar situation. I like to stress though to those who come across this thread to please not blindly follow the instructions given here, as they apply to this very specific situation ONLY. However, the approach of the issue and underlaying method is the lesson we can all take away from here.
Once again (and I repeat myself here) this forum has proven its absolute value for those who persevere, assisted by those who did not give up on them who needed help. Rest assured I will make a donation to this forum before the day has come to an end. A big THANK YOU to all who have helped me out, specially kunix and loly!
@ admins/mods: this thread may be marked SOLVED and then locked. Thank you!![]()
OK, thread marked [Solved]! But let's not close it in case some other poor soul needs some black magic exorcism. A lesson here for us all that sometimes 'foreign' fw bin files can be flashed to the wrong unit if they're in the HWID folder, and that some bins will and some bins won't. I've been following this thread with some interest.
PS: Would you like an old post somewhere deleted so that your post above becomes 666 kunix? [A rhetorical question, wouldn't wish to spoil the 'dark magic']. On a serious note, are you able to patch ALL boot bins to execute such non-standard rgn writing or is it possible only on some?
