I remind you that although i've taken all possible care in making this kit that you assume all risk in its use. Look behind the Spoiler below:

@Butters thanks for providing the files, but I don't seem to get to "Loader"/"Software Loading" will appear on screen after the Garmin logo, it just boots up as normal and then complains the sdcard needs formatting (to FAT) and asks me to format
Do not format the SD card while it is in the Garmin.
Take it out first.then complains the sdcard needs formatting (to FAT) and asks me to format
To many users wind up formatting the internal memory by mistake.
Unplug the Garmin from you PC or laptop first.
Then remove the SD card.
Like you were told by Butters:
There is no need to do anything else to the SD card........Extract the RAR file directly onto a CLEAN small microSD formatted in FAT32:

@aspirin624
The sdcard is formatted FAT32 on my computer and I have extracted the RAR file as shown in pic 1, with all possible permutations relative to root
With the 50 LM fully shutdown I insert the sdcard and it goes through pics 2 to pic 5 and ends on pic 5, after pic 2 I expected it to install the new firmware

I do not think what you put on the SD card is correct.
What should be on the sd card is just:
Garmin <-----folder
14.bin <------this file
127.bin <----this file
But check with Butters
PS:
I have never been in favor of any users doing this that have very little or no background in understanding what they are doing on Garmin GPS Units.
It is better just to leave the fully working Garmin unit alone.
Be very careful not to screw up a working Garmin Unit.......

@mmain
Make sure your device is fully charged.
Unpack contents to fresh SD card formatted FAT32 (Garmin folder,14.Bin & 127.Bin files only)
Ensure your device is fully OFF (not in standby), insert the card into your device and power on.
"Loader" will appear on screen for a while then the device will boot up when the flash of patched firmware is complete.
Your device may reboot its self during the process just be patient.
Your SD card will have a new file named 154.bin this is a backup of the device's non-volatile memory region and may save your device later if needed,so keep a copy of it somewhere safe.
Well in this case it's not his fault. I wrote my instructions incorrectly/vaguely, in a hurry at the time. The first line should not read "Extract the RAR file directly onto a CLEAN small microSD formatted in FAT32", rather it's required to do this:
Extract the RAR file to find folder 'SD_Flash_ Kit' and then place the contents of that folder directly onto a CLEAN small microSD formatted in FAT32
I agree with asprin264 that these kits can be dangerous in inexperienced hands but only if they try to make or modify them. Also as Garmin_Nuvi is well-aware, i won't make kits to illegally modify fw (e.g. to use unlocked mapping data), nor will i give ppl advice on how to make flash kits (If they have to ask how, their skill level is almost certainly below requirements). The use of a properly made kit is perfectly safe in unskilled hands as the device will only read the contents of the final folder IF its naming matches the HWID of the actual device. The real danger is in using the wrong Ldr.bin as ramloader in that folder. If an incompatible ramloader is used and so ultimately the bootloader (region 5) has wrong data the device may never turn on again after next boot attempt, i.e. hard-bricked.
Sorry for the confusion mmain, try again. None of this is actually your fault, it's mine. You followed the instructions to the letter but they were lacking, not you.
@Butters I have tried with only the structure shown in pic 1 on a newly FAT32 formatted sdcard, and have also tried using a different sdcard, but the Garmin just boots up as normal apart from complaining about the sdcard format i.e. "Loader" does not appear in the boot process

Did you use only a Windows PC to format the cards FAT32? It seems the device is objecting to the format and not even looking at the card's contents. If you used a MacOS it formats slightly differently from Windows, also sometimes even the built-in format tool in Windows Disk Management can cause problems with some garmin devices, the latter is very rare with cards but common with internal memory formats.
If you don't wish to format the card while it's in the device as prompted in your Pic 5 of Post #24, try using the official SD Formatter tool:

@mmain,
Are you doing this????
Ensure your device is fully OFF (not in standby), insert the card into your device and power on.
You hold the power button in till you see this on the screen.
Spoiler: You have to have this screen to turn off the Garmin......
You tap on off and wait till the screen is off.
Then put the SD card in and turn the Garmin back on again.
Post a screen shot that you turned off your Garmin to make sure you did it correctly.
