    Default Garmin Streetpilot C320

    Hi all,

I have recently found my old Streetpilot C320 ( first GPS ever ) while doing some spring cleaning. After replacing the battery, it seems it has City Navigator 2010 maps on it I would like to freshen up.

There is a 2 gig limit on it, but is it possible to install latest 2024 maps on it, atleast for a single country? If someone could point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. I would donate it to my grandpa who is a former professional driver. Thing is, he hates complicated technology and this would be right up his alley.

Already tested some latest OSM maps, and everything works, but Garmin maps would be preferable.

    Thank you.

Unfortunately you won't find Garmin maps here, see [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    @TomoHR
Once you locate the latest map as said in the above post, you'll need to either create a small GMAPSUPP.IMG no bigger than 2,147,483,647 bytes, which is 1 byte less than 2 GiB (binary gigibytes) or you might locate one already compiled which suits your purposes. SP c3x0 devices can read an SD card formatted in either FAT16 or FAT32 but if you use a (so-called) 2GB card it will be decimal gigibytes which is maximum size of around 2,000,000 bytes, so to maximize the map size you're best to use a 4GB or larger card but avoid very large cards. SPc3x0 cannot have a detail map written to the internal memory, they are only usable on an SD card in a Garmin folder.

We are happy to give you general advice here as to how to update the map, we just cannot supply you with unlocked mapping data.

Thank you. Sorry I forgot to mention that I do not expect anyone to provide me with any maps, unlocked or not. There are ways to go about that

Anything else I should watch out for, when it comes to this device? It's been a long time since it's been tinkered with. Does it support unicode or non unicode maps? Any place I can download firmwares, latest audio files? Does it need those base image files for maps updated?

Quite surprised it works with latest maps, to be honest. This little device proves to be indestructible and, to an extent, immortal. It is slow, but still probably much faster than my gramps.

Again, thank you all very much for taking the time and helping out.

It cannot process unicode characters so stick with the NT map version ("non unicode") as said by Garmin_Nuvi or you may get errors during use.

It might even still be up-to-date but if not you can get the "latest" firmware version 6.10, issued almost 16 years ago, from here:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
or you can just connect it to WebUpdater to get latest version as well as any available updates for Voice etc.. If you need WebUpdater you can get it here:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
Because your SP c320 doesn't have Mass Storage Mode it won't be supported by GarminExpress which is a much more modern software than WebUpdater. However WU is perfectly functional for updating such old 'region-only' devices which are without the function to browse the internal memory.

By "base image files" if you mean the basemap and time-zone map, it doesn't use the latter and the former is contained in region 3 of the internal memory which is likely quite size-restricted so a modern World Wide DEM Base Map would almost certainly not fit in region3 despite it being only ~46 MiB. The gmapbmap.img on-board would be a quite old EU non-DEM only (maybe it's even just a partial, like eastern or western Europe, idk) however despite the EU naming it would contain some basic information for the rest of the world so even if it's only East EU you can still use it elsewhere. A Basemap is generally only fully utilized if a navigation task goes beyond the coverage of the detail map or when manually scrolling the map while zoomed out, but of course must be present for glitch-free navigation. It is the presence of it, not the age of the basemap that's of great importance. In fact Garmin doesn't even bother offering devices any basemap updates via WU or GE for that reason.

I don't recall if that series can use Safety Cams alerts but as i doubt gramps will be running reds or speeding going by your description of him, you can skip them anyway. If you want me to make you a custom Logo splash screen to flash to Region 16 reading something like "Welcome Captain Slow. Don't forget the go pedal is the little one on the right!" - Just give me the wording in the language you want.... nothing naughty though, we don't want the old bloke to get a nasty shock first time he boots it up do we?

Mr. Butters, you are indeed a person of knowledge, a scholar and a gentleman. Thank you for the detailed info.

The idea with the message is a very welcome one. Sure gramps would appreciate a personalized message :D Please, do a splash screen that says ( inside the quote ):

"Generale Spori, molimo obratite pozornost na pedalu gasa koja se u vozilu nalazi dolje desno. Nakon pokretanja vozila, istu je potrebno pritisnuti do kraja!"
"General Slow, please pay attention to the gas pedal, which is located on the lower right side of the vehicle. After starting the vehicle, it must be pressed all the way in!"

One question, if I may... battery inside of the Streetpilot is, me thinks, a 18650 2000 mAh cell I replaced quite some time ago. I distinctively remember it had some sort of an integrated circuit on it, connected to the plus and minus side of the battery, and then to the cables and the connector. Anyone knows what that specific IC is? It did not look like standard battery protection module. Probably some proprietary crap Garmin added just to mess with possible homebrew battery replacements. Asking because there is a high capacity unused Molicel P42 battery I have lying around and would like to "upgrade" the device with some hardcore "going around Europe on a single charge" type battery life. And also, it's a known fact gramps will forget the charger wherever he is off to...

EDIT ( Battery shenanigans ): Opened the unit up and did some tests. It's some sort of a charging limiter. Output directly from the Streetpilot motherboard is 4.12V, and adding the IC to the mix makes the charging output to the battery come down to 4V. I guess it IS some sort of overcharge protection, since this specific model does not have any type of sensor on the charging circuit, or it does not follow any CC/CV Li-Ion charging curve. Even without the battery, after plugging in the mini USB charger, screen says "Charging battery" So, if anyone wants to change the battery like me, be sure to return the IC back to the replaced 18650, or else there is a big chance you'll be rather unpleasantly surprised when the battery... well, explodes.

Bit of a delay getting this posted because the forum's been down for me the last day or so. Better late than never so here's a first draft of what it'll look like on boot up:

If you want to change anything - wording, layout, font, color of text or background etc. just say what you'd like.

No need to change anything. It's pure perfection. Thank you.

Hardly perfection but thanks anyway. Before we go further, it's occurred to me that there were different board versions of SPc3x0, most were HWID 382 which is the one i have here. I need you to confirm your HWID using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], the the number i'm looking for is as shown in the pic below - yours might be different:

To ensure it works, i've flashed the logo file temporarily to my c320 it boots up fine and shows the splash screen like this:

    Spoiler: Click to see

Let me know its HWID and i'll make the flash kit for you accordingly. Yours might be 481 or 497 rather than 382 like mine.

Haha, guys you made my day as I know that language

Well done @Butters, and as TomoHR said, mr Butters is indeed a person of knowledge, a scholar and a gentleman! Not many people of that kind around the forums these days.
