Another way to do it is if you have places you go to all the time for work as an example.
Then add them into your phones contacts list.
Be it the hotels you stay at over night or the customer you are going to see that day.
Then you can pick them any time you want in "MyPlaces".

This way you do not have to root your phone to get it to work with personal poi's.
Plus even if you root your phone you will not see them on the map screen.
You can pick a POI and go to it but if you are adding extra speed cams as an example you are not going to drive to it......

Plus rooting phones will void your warranty and a lot of phones can not be rooted or you brick your phone because you do not know what you are doing.

It is better to stick with what you can download and forget about rooting your phone.
Or if you need your personal POI's then you will have to use GPS apps that are more friendlier than the TomTom ones.
