The number for objects in the post 26, for example
26 Ferry
27 Ferry International
42 Marine Boundary (no line)
43 Marine Hazard (no line)
seem to be the decimal codes for Garmin objects - see "cGPSmapper User Manual" at [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], where you can find
26 Ferry
27 Ferry
28 Political Boundary
29 County Boundary
30 International Boundary
31 River
32 Land Contour (thin)
33 Land Contour (medium)
34 Land Contour (thick)
35 Depth Contour (thin)

I have found out this very important factor as well.

If the Map has a TYP file with Polygons and/or Polylines.The Nuvi will obey the TYP file and disregard the info in the Map Theme File.
Many people on Internet have said (I changed this colour but it did not work) Answer: the Map has a TYP File.
Most Recent City Navigator Maps have no Polygons or Polylines in the TYP File (Only EXTRA POI Icons like Shell,Macdonalds etc).
These Maps are ideal for manipulating with Map Themes.
We can also remove or Modify the Typ File on other Maps that we need to manipulate with Map themes.

I Fully Agree, that an Empty Map Theme is Garmin Maptheme and is the Ideal Starting Point for Editing.

Another Point XMLNotepad FREE from Microsoft Website is an ideal XML Editor which is 100% Compatible with Garmin Map Themes
This will save a lot of typing.

This is also for building, but if you change in two place, you overwrite Polygons and/or Polylines.
I try to change color of building becouse in night is hard to see and when i only change building color nothing happend becouse CN overlap color.
If you also change background color then work like charm.

When you have problem that your color dont work, try to change it in two area like i write on previous page.

These empty themes are rather example of Garmin laziness

You are right about default style. IMO priority goes like that:
- colors and patterns form TYP file but line width changed by theme,
- colors and line width from theme,
- definitions form firmware.

I'm looking for themes to use with my 3490, but found no where. The standard set is boring, Navigon theme is different, but less contrasting and informative than the standard Garmin theme.

I think if you read with patience this topic can make your own theme or variations of existing ones. If you want a different theme, built with defined objective, but it can be used normally see in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] If you make an interesting theme, do not forget to post here in the fórum.

The Map Theme Style for Changing the Colour of Urban Land (City and Suburban) is MAP_URBAN_LAND_CLR.

This Example Demonstrates this style by changing urban land from Grey to Yellow (day) and Mauve (night).
With Blue Navigation line. (Style MAP_RTE_ACTV_LEG_CLR).

I've just bought a Nuvi 2455 and the available map themes are very limited - it's like going from "light colored hard to see" to "lighter colored harder to see". I've tried customising the KMTF files but i was not succesful - i'm not whether i was doing it right or not.

DOes anyone have a good nuvi map theme .KMTF file that has great contrast for daylight ? the current options have the roads in light colors so the roads just disappear into the light colored background in bright conditions in the car - I love my TOMTOMs colors and they way the TOMTOMs colors can be edited......

I have one that looks great during the day. I spent hours changing and modifying a kmtf file with the sole purpose of making it higher contrast for daylight. See attached.
