Check you have the audible alert enabled. On 6xx (from my uncertain memory) it's Settings>Proximity Points>Alerts>Change>Audio and confirm you have the correct setting.

Yep, done all the checks. "Garmin Safety Cameras" ticked in Proximity Alerts, audio set to "single tone".
Just made a TourGuide file and loaded it, the TourGuide Alert text box pops up and the sound plays, so now I am thinking that the GUPDATE.GCD file which contains the beep sound may be corrupted because I think all was well until I updated to 4.90.
I'm going to load 4.80 from my backup and reboot to see if it cures it.
