I don't use Garmin Maps so I don't have the need to unlock anything even other brands of GPS's, the Mapping software I use is not locked in anyway and is not a "Tell me how to get from A to B GPS" is a Moving Map display GPS locked.
The post was mainly towards Butters to give you a hand.
