    That's a bit light on info Mate, 'didn't work' is a tad genetic. However, a common problem is that an attempt to go directly back to the desired lower version fails with some units, Astro 320 is one such unit. When a progressive step-by-step to the next lowest is tried it will work. i.e. one at a time: 4.40>4.20>4.00>3.90>3.80>3.70>3.60>3.40. Read fully and then post again back in the following thread if you need more help: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. The problem was first noted going back from V3.70 to 3.40 as per [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] there.

    @hcch
    You won't achieve anything at all by downgrading the firmware. All versions from 2.80 to current 5.30 have strong MSV protection so you must patch the firmware, use the latest V5.30 for that. As there is also GVS protection, the patched firmware must be loaded as an RGN file in pre-boot mode using Updater.exe but only for initial patching. Subsequent patched versions can be done by a GCD file ongoing. Read this thread: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. I also gave you that thread's link several days ago over here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. There is (currently at least) no other way to use unlocked maps on your DriveLuxe. Post in the Patcher thread if you need more help, but read the first several posts at least before posting there. Pay particular attention to Note 3 in Post No. 2 should RGN_Tool fail to flash the RGN file.

    I am trying to roll back nuvi 57 firmware and am unable to do so by following advice found here and elsewhere. Garmin is intentionally downgrading this product with firmware updates. Latest version renders the unit unable to interact with Basecamp and hides waypoints. I have downloaded an earlier version, and copied to the Garmin folder -- no joy. I have also created a System folder, and copied to there -- no joy. Any other ideas, or will I just have to throw this piece of junk in the garbage?

    @GermanStar
    Try this then:
    Spoiler:
    Open the GCD file in RGN_Tool and press the 'RGN" button saving the file as"XXXX01000xxx.rgn" where 'XXXX' represents the HWID of your nuvi 57 (should be 2087) and 'xxx' is the firmware version (e.g. version 4.50 is '450').

    [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Drag the saved RGN file onto Updater.exe and enable the radio button next to 'USB Device'. Put the 57 into preboot, click 'OK' to execute the downgrade. Click thru any message about lower version.
    Code:

    Thanks for the push, I really appreciate it! Unfortunately, I cannot get past the following message from Updater: there are no usb devices available

    I have tried with three different Garmin units (nuvi52, gsmap64s, and nuvi57) on two different PCs: Win 10 and Vista). No joy.

    EDit: The problem may be my unfamiliarity with preboot. What is preboot, and how to achieve it?

    OK I've done a little more research, and now successfully have the device in Mass Storage mode, and believe I sorted out preboot -- thumb on upper left, hit power, then connect to USB before calibration screen, thought I don't see preboot mode anywhere on the display. Still no joy: there are no usb devices available

    Some more tips:
    • You need Garmin USB Drivers loaded to the PC for it to see devices in preboot: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
    • In Mass Storage Mode check for a file named gupdate.gcd in the device's (usually hidden) .System folder. If that file is present remove it or the device may flash back to current firmware version after downgrade. You may need to make changes to folder options in your computer. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    • Have the RGN file already loaded to Updater.exe BEFORE putting the device in preboot. Enable the radio button for 'USB Device' and leave the GUI open and visible on your desktop.
    • To enter preboot have device fully OFF (not in standby), connect a usb cable directly to a REAR port only of PC (no hub), hold top LH corner of screen and connect the device while watching the GUI and hit 'Enter' key on KB or 'OK' button of GUI. Keep holding screen firmly until you get success message from Updater.exe or hold at least until 'Loader' shows on device screen.
