    Default NÜVI 2597 problems

I have been tearing out my hair after 2 days of hell with a Garmin NÜVI 2597 Sat Nav. I tried an update & to cut a long story short if formatted the Garmin & not the Micro SD card. So far as an Apple user I have had to build a windows machine on an old lappy. Follow all your kind help by reading every post & installing software. I managed to get into the Garmin & retrieve the following:
ID2077 NÜVI 25x9 Version 8.80. Grok tells me I need NUVI 2xx7and 2xx8c4_800.gcd. I cannot for the life of me get that firmware anywhere without it going corrupt. Can anyone please email me that file please? <Removed-not allowed publicly>
I believe these are the next steps:
    Open the .gcd in GarminCure3.
Create the Cure version and flash it with Updater.exe in preboot (same timing technique you’ve been practising).
Once the unit stays connected and appears as a drive, check/delete any obvious bad files (especially anything in the root or .System folder that looks recent or corrupted).
Then create and flash the original (non-Cure) version of the same firmware.
I am hopeless at text forums so apologise in adance

    Any help appreciated,

    regards

    Steve

If you mean by "the Garmin" that you either (i) got it into Preboot Mode (aka Garmin Mode) and obtained it's HWID as 2077 via [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] or (ii) from a backup of its file system, then you are safe to use the "C4" version as per above post#2.

I believe these are the next steps:
    Open the .gcd in GarminCure3.

Once the unit stays connected and appears as a drive, check/delete any obvious bad files (especially anything in the root or .System folder that looks recent or corrupted). Not needed, connect and re-do the format instead - see below
Then create and flash the original (non-Cure) version of the same firmware.

Because you've likely formatted it with a Mac OS the format won't be properly acceptable to the proprietary Garmin OS. Even Windows built-in tool sometimes isn't perfect. Therefore, you need to use [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] to format it correctly in FAT32 so please read the guide in kunix's [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] carefully. The are no corrupt files on it because the previous format attempt, albeit perhaps incompatible with the device, has completely removed all folders and files. Note the final point in #2 of "The typical curing algorithm (in general) looks like this" carefully and read the entire initial post. If you have a 'known-good' backup you may restore files from it or use GarminExpress to recover them but it won't give you a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Morning, thanks for the reply. I did eventually get the info from the Garmin & as a Noob it was hell (took me a day & a lot of reading). Turns out I needed to tick a check box in software on the Windows PC. I followed a guide by Kunik I think. Thank you for the files. I will go back to his guide & try to install them. The issues I was observing in Windows devices manage was very odd. Dersite having the very latest Garmin drivers it would only show the Garmin as connected for about a minute & then drop it.
    ...............................

Thank you for your help, I will try and follow what you have posted. I really have screwed up as I was trying to update it using MacOS before putting it up for sale on Ebay. I was too lazy to build a Windows machine to do the update for one sale! ( I have now & Dual Boot to Cinamon). I am not sure if the.GCD is one of the files kindly provided by Garman_nuvi above. I am going to print off your post & fire up the Windows PC today & give it another go, been at this 2 days. Thank you all for your help. It was much easier in the old days of Tom Tom & I still have that old device!

When the device is in preboot mode it will only show in Windows Device Manager for a brief time. It varies between devices, some are only for ~10 seconds, others may hold preboot for around a minute, and many are ~30 seconds. It's during that time that a flash of an RGN file flash from Updater.exe is possible to initiate, but once there's an exchange of data packets between it and the computer the device will hold preboot until the flash finishes.

Garman_Nuvi has kindly supplied you with both cured and original RGN files. Normally, you would have to make an RGN from the official GCD supplied by Garmin's server using kunix's Cure3 software.

If after reading everything you're still unsure, just ask and we'll walk you thru the process as needed.

Update. Firstly thank you evryone for your help so far. I am stuck between a rock & a hard place. I cannot keep the device in pre- boot mode for more thatn a few seconds. My Garmin refuses to power down & eventually goes flat. when I press the power off button it goed dark after a few seconds & the goesStainght into the GARMIN splash screen & that's it. So then I try pre-boot mode. I hod the power button & touch the upper left screen. I see SYSTEM go top to bottom in four pulses about 6 times & release when loading appears. Now in Device manager I see the Garmin drivers appear whilst the word SYSTEM is on the Garmin screen. The minute loading appears & I release power & remove my finger from the screen the Garmin Icon disappears from the Device manger list. This means I cannot do anything from this point. no software can see the Garmin, My Garmin Drivers are the lastest on a Windows 10 machine.Updater also refuses to run on this PC but does suggest running from command line. The Garmin 2597 always ends up on the calibration screen which does nothing as there are no drivers to run it. RMprepUSB v2.2.4 won't see it obviously. Do I need to try again in an older version of Windows? Many thansk for your kind attention.

The device has previously entered then exited preboot when it's showing the 'calibration screen' like in your image.

You need to be very quick to start the flash from Updater.exe. Although the post linked below is for a dezl device not a nuvi 2xx7, the procedure for expeditiously initiating the flash is the same. Follow that guide, in principle. You'll be able to re-enable Mass Storage Mode via Cure fw, so then the device's internal memory can be properly formatted. Make sure you remove any media card from it beforehand to avoid confusion when formatting.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] - just follow the bullet points only. His device was soft-bricked, not badly formatted so other info in the post is not applicable to you)

    danger Updated

Hi, thank you for coming back so quickly. i would really appriecate a walk through explaining what software I use & what file Kunix kindly sent. I am sorry to be a pain.
The seperate updater software refuses to run on my PC so I guess i run this from GarminCure3. Sorry about the spoiler thing, I really struggle with forums as I normally use FB groups. Regards Steve
UPDATE, I have made some progress. I created a Folder C:\Garmin & put the GarminCure & Updater.exe in that. I gave both run as admin In File properties. This allowed the software to work & Upadater ran too. I could briefly see the path appear in USB device and it said it was updating. I have the 207701000800.rgn file in the same folder & I think it ran that but failed as it's still stuck on the Garmin Logo. Do I need the file marked cure?
I watched the Garmin saying that it uploaded software & watched files load on the installer. It said everything went ok. The Garmin did not boot but just says Garmin on the screen, I am begining to think it had a hardware issue, It refuses tio turmn off, the screen will go blank if you hold down the power button but immediately boots to the Garmin splash screen.
