I have a similar problem with a friend's unit. Tried more or less what you have tried already...
The end result was a dead unit within 3 days of attempts.
In my opinion there were some dead memory blocks (bad sectors) in chip memory affecting several regions of FW.
I'll follow the thread - may be someone will sugest something I did't tried.
