In explanation of the message 'System Software Missing' which is encountered when a unit software update is not completed. It can happen in 2 ways: Firstly [and commonly] an interrupted 'normal' firmware update [where the unit loses power or loses it's data connection to PC or an online update is cancelled midway or an internet outage occurs] resulting in the current firmware, aka system software, being erased but the updated firmware not being completely installed. The second way it occurs is during a conversion or 'cross-flash' where it's desired to retain the HWID but an 'inappropriate' boot.bin is used and there's simply not the capability to load the new firmware. In either case loading the complete original firmware to the unit will usually successfully fix it because the HWID has been retained and the bootloader was unchanged.

The 2nd scenario is what you faced using the US boot.bin, and the unit was not successfully loading the Asian firmware but that problem is normally quite easily reversible as you've found.

    When you said this:
............. and with the file provided in the package.
do you mean that you tried to load the full Asian firmware with Updater.exe [gupdate.gcd first converted to *.rgn file using RGN_Tool]? Or did you simply try to load it by using the Asian launcher.exe tool? The second method will only work if your unit already has a correct Asian HWID of course.

The flashing of complete Asian firmware with Updater.exe has a much better chance of working because it has the correct boot bin to load the fw, but it will change the HWID to Asian and also has a much higher chance of 'bricking' the unit. The chance of bricking is lessened by the matching PCB P/Ns however. If you haven't tried that but don't wish to do so because of the higher bricking risk that's completely understandable of course and i'm not trying to encourage you to do so, simply because i don't have a HWID 1582 device to try it first.

Perhaps if some member has already tried a full Asian flash in US/EU HWID 1582 2xx7 they'll post here to report the results.

Hi Neil. Finally I chose to flash full Thai firmware - the device started up properly. However there was no sign of success. I could change the menu to Thai - but I'm pretty sure that this is also possible with European firmware. Futhermore I still didn't get a Thai keyboard so I still had to do any search by English locations. I copied the content of the text folder delivered with the Thai firmware but nothing changed. However I'm not sure if this really is a Thai update as I can hardly find anything in the internet. Do you have links to Thai firmware??? Another sign of not being successful is the fact that in the device information file it's still HWID 1582. Can this be possible??? Update.exe reported a successful firmware update.... Regards Chris

I've just found a new Thai firmware update. Usually it won't be downloaded but you get "Use Garmin Express to install this file." Another thread describes how to extract the download link from the source text ;-) That works great.....
