Perhaps you've read this from Garmin regarding using WebUpdater to fix the no-MSM access problem with outdoor devices. They refer to preboot mode as performing 'a boot block'. I don't think it will work for your eTrex because you have 'System Software Missing' message' as well as no MSM access:

You need to now use those tools to access Mass Storage Mode as explained in Post #4. Read all the linked threads in that post so that you understand both the process and the purpose of loading a modified Cure firmware in preboot using Updater.exe as said earlier, because reaching preboot in itself doesn't achieve anything and the next step is to stop the unit booting completely which can only be achieved by cure fw. You must have a USB connection to then load the Cure fw. It may be enough for you to load Cure fw, remove gupdate.gcd file from the internal memory if it's present, reload original fw and not even need to reformat. Check you have latest Garmin USB drivers loaded too. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
