Reaching preboot in itself isn't doing anything, so even if your unit is in preboot if you don't start a flash with Updater.exe it will simply take itself out of preboot within a short period.

You need to check some things, I don't have any access to an eTrex at present but if that series retains a copy of gupdate.gcd on the unit it will need to be removed before doing anything otherwise it will try to flash again from that wrong file after the proper firmware has been loaded. In explanation: 'System Software Missing' message means the unit has been flashed with incorrect or corrupted firmware. Try to access Mass Storage Mode. If your unit can't be seen in MSM by PC and it has gupdate.gcd on it you will need to load cure firmware to be able to access MSM. If you can access MSM, either now or after the cure, remove the GCD file and then flash the original firmware [software] as an RGN file using Updater.exe only. If you're not sure, you could flash it with original fw anyway and if it starts to boot but loads firmware again you'll know gupdate.gcd is onboard.

    Some reading for you:

I fixed my eTrex 30 using the procedure outlined in "How to unbrick a Nüvi". I first used "updater.exe" lo load a cure xxx.rgn image made with the GarminCure3 tool, then I made and loaded a full yyy.rgn image.
What I missed at first was that you have to hold the stick in the up position during the entire load process. A bit tricky, but it worked.

    Hi All,

Please, I have an eTrex 20 (software 2.80) and was going to download an update (Ver 3.90) this morning using my laptop hp ENVY (Windows 8.1-64 bits) and I got the SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING message. Then I cannot re boot the eTrex, as well as I cannot browse to it when it's connected to my laptop. My laptop cannot connect with it (when I use its USB cable).

Kindly, could you let me know how to get my Garmin etrex20 get back working? What I have to do?

    Many thanks in advance.
