I have tried both process in updating the firmware of nuvi 2595 (US).
I found out that for RGN you need to be in pre-boot mode which quite difficult for some to do. But based on what I have read so far to be in pre-boot can be done in 2 ways:
1. Pressing the upper Left Hand most portion of the nuvi then presss on wait till the PC recognizes the device
or
2. Press the battery icon for ~10 sec and a new screen with a lot of data will appear; connect usb cable and device will be recognized by the PC.
My experience on using this process when I was trying to install PH firmware will make my 2595 go to endless loop reboot mode or Software Missing message.
As for copying GUPDATE.gcd process (loading in SD card in GARMIN\ directory) I do not get the same state of endless reboot loop and Software Missing message. But I assume that the firmware is updated because if I use the PH firmware, the device will just prompt a message that the sofware you are loading is older version than what is installed and all data will be cleared/erased. I just click YES.
So what is the difference?
Honestly, I do not have the answer but the second process will remove the scare of your life that your device has been "bricked." :-)
