To reach the calibration screen the device must first enter preboot so clearly you're using the correct procedure to start it in preboot. The sequence is this: The device enters preboot mode for a pre-determined time, if it does not receive any data from Updater.exe to initiate a flash in that time it will then default to the white screen. Modern devices like 57 stay in preboot for a very short time.

So therefore your 57 was in preboot but didn't receive any data from Updater.exe in time. That might be because you didn't have fw loaded to Updater.exe before putting the device in preboot and used up all the time or you initiated the flash but the data wasn't received due to an unsuitable USB cable or an unsuitable USB port or Garmin Device driver isn't loaded to the PC in use.

So load the fw to Updater.exe, select the radio button next to 'USB Device' and leave the GUI visible on your desktop. Have the device fully OFF (not in standby) then hold the screen and power it on by connecting it to one of the PC's rear ports (not thru a hub). Immediately you see the device details appear in the window next to USB Device on Updater's GUI hit enter on your PCV keyboard or click 'OK' on the GUI. Keep holding the screen firmly until the flash finishes or at least until 'Software Loading' or similar appears on the device screen.

You can easily check that the device is being seen by the PC in preboot rather than MSM by having Device Manager open and watch where it appears.
