They are 'localised' for the market in which they are sold. Ostensibly the default locale setting is for the user to easily and quickly select their correct locale. However, I suspect it is also linked to the localisation which prevents you adding an LM subscription other than the one same as the OEM map and obtaining ancillary files for a one-off purchase of an area or country not the same as the original map. This is not a firmware function as US/EU/AUNZ/SAf/SAm etc all use the same fw, so it must be linked to the unit's Registration and Unlock codes shown in GarminDevice.xml as written into rgn41 of NV memory. Regarding the sat lock problem of bobokom, a total gps hardware failure will endlessly show the first pic below. If the unit's identifying some sats but doesn't have a fix as in the other pics then i agree with the other comments and the unit should fully lock-on if given a clear view of the sky for up to 30 minutes, stationary if possible. Otherwise it may possibly be a partial hardware failure ...
