After cure firmware is properly loaded using preboot mode, the device should revert to Mass Storage Mode not Media Transport Protocol.

Rather than your 580's internal folders and files showing under Windows File Explorer in MTP as you've assumed, it may simply be that your PC isn't set to show hidden and system files. Read Post #5 here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

    Hey guys.

    Edge 1030 Plus.

I managed to get the right .GCD file. Used GarminCure3.exe as admin to create original .RGN file. I'm able to preboot. Updater.exe is in the same folder as GarminCure3.exe BUT I got an error message stating that the is NO USB device. Still, I can access my Edge folders. Tried to place the RGN file in the same folder as updater.exe and GarminCure3.exe but no luck.

Any idea how to fix this?

    Best regards,

    Fred

What are you wanting to fix now? Either the Edge wasn't actually "bricked" at all, or, if it was initially, then GarminCure3's RGN was in fact loaded correctly. That's evidenced by you having access to the device's folders.

    Hello everyone,
I’m having an issue with an Garmin Astro 320 that is stuck on the Garmin logo during startup.
I tried following the Kunix tutorial, but unfortunately without success. I flashed the cure firmware, however the device still does not appear as an external disk/drive on the computer. I also tried flashing the original firmware again for testing, but that didn’t help either.
In the past, I performed the same recovery procedure successfully on another device, so I’m not sure what’s different this time.
I also attempted to back up Region 41, but that failed as well.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what else I could try?

    @kagourakos
Not being able to dump non-vol or any other region to an SD is expected when a device has stuck on the logo splash screen because the card is looked for only after maps and other essential files are loaded during the boot cycle.

There are 3 possible reasons to explain why Cure3 fw is not working to re-enable Mass Storage Mode:
    (i) You've made some error in making the cure fw (unlikely); or
(ii) the Cure3 method doesn't work for your astro's firmware (also unlikely); or
(iii) the device is not 'soft-bricked' at all and rather is experiencing a flash chip problem.

If you've made multiple attempts making the cure fw and also tried QuickCure3 unsuccessfully then the astro may well be in the early stages of a hardware failure and no software methods can help that as you'd understand.

It’s probably the end of this old device and I may have to replace it

Hello everyone, this is my first time here. I have a 1490LMT for years that I usually use when I go to trips. Last year I refreshed the maps, went on a trip and used it with no problems. We came back and I stored it until 4 days ago when I decided to plug it in to my computer to charge so I can check if I needed to update anything before a trip I am planning to take. After being stuck on what looked at the logo screen for a while, I paid closer attention and realized that it was stuck in a boot loop much like a few folks described in the past.

    Here is what I see:
    1. Power on Nuvi 1490
    2. Garmin screen for about 20 seconds
    3. Quick blink with white screen
    4. Black screen for a few seconds
    5. Return to step #2 and repeat

I tried to review the whole thread but I did not find a possible solution. Here's what I tried up to now:

    1. Plugged USB cable provided by garmin to computer
    2. Run g7 and got the ID: 972, & version: 6.30
    3. Downloaded GCD: nuvi13xxand14xxseries_GCDFile__630.gcd
    4. Run GarminCure3 and added GCD
    5. Clicked on "CURE" radio button
    6. Clicked on "Make firmware" which made 097201000630.gcd
    7. Clicked on Updater.exe
    8. Clicked on "USB Device" radio button
    9. While pressing and holding my finger in the upper left hand corner of nuvi screen (my finger remained pressed to the upper left hand corner throughout all the steps below)
    10. Plugged the USB cable to back of garmin
    11. The device booted with the screen showing the logo
    12. As soon as the "USB device" appeared in USB box of the Updater window on computer, I clicked on "OK" to start update
    13. I OK'ed the message that the version was the same and I wanted to proceed
    14. The device now showed the screen showing the logo and right above it: "Software Loading"
    15. The dialog showed "Updating". About 15 seconds or so later, the dialog showed "Erasing". About 10 seconds later the nuvi lost connectivity and a dialog popped up with the message:
"The GARMIN device is unable to program the requested memory region. This could be due to incompatibility between this application and the GARMIN device. If this error continues to occur, pleas contact GARMIN Technical Support."

So it seems that my nuvi does not stay connected long enough to CURE, and based on what I have read there is not much more I can try to get it to boot.

I have seen that in some replies, folks were given an zip file to try to boot from an SD card and see if they could write/read in specific regions of the nuvi, but most of the links are no longer valid. Does anyone have the files for that method for a 1490 so I can attempt that as a last resort?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Boot-looping devices can often be tricky to put into preboot but you've handled that ok. An otherwise-healthy device will normally not drop preboot nor lose the USB connection once the flash is initiated. Because your 1490 has spontaneously developed a boot-loop after storage, it may be a physical hardware failure rather than a bad on-board file or a firmware corruption causing the problem... although usually an unreadable fw region throws a "System Software Missing" screen message rather than causing a boot-loop. The message from Updater about being "unable to program the requested memory region" unfortunately is very often an indication of the flash chip beginning to fail. The memory is made up of various discrete 'regions', as mentioned, some of which contain the firmware/system software required to properly boot and operate the device. It may be that one of those, rgn14 being the most likely, is fatally affected and can no longer accept a flash due to damage affecting it. Flash chip failure is often progressive and always eventually it's total, resulting in a dead device which no longer even powers on.

There can be other less likely causes of that error, for example, a dodgy USB cable or a loose USB socket that's 'making & breaking'. Less likely is using USB3 rather than a USB2 port, using a front port or via a hub rather than a rear port on a desktop. Therefore, to eliminate any of those faint possibilities, use only a 'known-good' cable and a USB2 port which connects directly to the computer's motherboard to flash fw. Check carefully that the device's USB socket has no movement, it it's wobbly the solder connections to the board might be cracked.

Cure fw is only of use to stall the boot process and re-enable Mass Storage Mode so that a bad file can be removed or a reformat to be done in an extreme case of file system corruption. It really cannot help in recovering a device with a firmware problem, that needs a different approach. Cure fw in that case will just turn a boot-loop into a stalled boot and then still require original fw flashed. Nor can cure fw do anything for an impending flash failure of course. If it is only a 'soft' corruption of data in a firmware region then flashing with original fw from Updater will be successful.

After eliminating all cable/port as possible connection failures, I'd be holding onto the hope that this is a soft-fail rather than the flash chip dying and just keep trying to flash it, over and over, as i've suggested above. As a last resort you could try opening the case and disconnecting the battery for some hours to completely drain the PCB. That will occasionally restore a stubbornly boot-looping device albeit rarely.
