When you power on Nuvi (holding finger on upper left LCD corner) quickly connect USB cable to PC. Almost instantly you'll see preboot mode.
As said aekhong updater.exe must be already executed.

Downloaded updater.exe, but cannot run it. (If I try to run the exe I get the message "No update files could be found")

Updater.exe must be executed from command line with rgn file name as parameter (example UPDATER.EXE 110100010260.rgn ). Or put updater (not shortcut) on your desktop and then drop on it rgn file.
