Neil you are right. I know this and I posted about this in some of my previous posts:

I was mistaken by WebUpdater also recognizes a 3760, is there a method to "correct" this issue?
    Webupdater recognizes as 3490 but indicates it's a 3760.

WebUpdater shows model number form GarminDevice.xml and this remains 3760 but all updates are downloaded according to HID, which is for 34xx. So no problem here.

Thx Kanopus for this information. Yes via WebUpdater the 34xx files were downloaded, so it's only a little optical "imperfection"

NP, sorry, i should have known you would never be confused about that, Voyager. And you are also right to comment that the two statements are contradictory of course, but depending on the meaning attributed to 'recognized'. I think pusti123 wanted to have both his device splash screen and WebUpdater 'display' as 34xx instead of 3760 (as in 'recognize' his device as 34xx). In the sense that you mean 'recognize' for WU, it's for the HWID for 34xx of course. Ah, semantics ......

You are just not experienced. Most of not experienced users are confused by that Webupdater or Nuvi boot screen indicates one model and in fact it acts like other model.

As having made a reg 41 backup of my 3760 before flashing it to 3490 I used WinHex to find the device ID in the 41.bin file, but I was not succesful.
Maybe the ID is crypted or stored in another reg.
I also have a 3750 (unfortunately with a defective LCD/Touch), with this device I would it risk to patch reg 41.

What do you mean by device ID? If it's HWID so there is no need to change it.
    Or you mean UnitID?
