Interesting, the size of this map has been reduced from 3.06 GB (v3) to 2.28 GB (v4).
The rastermap version of Topo Switzerland v4 was reduced too, resulting in a rastermap with a much lower resolution than v3!
    Time to do some tests...

I compared v4 against v3 and as expected: jpeg-compression is much higher in v4

I don't understand this trend to lower raster-map resolutions whereas the accepted SD cards are getting larger !?

Maybe Garmin is hopeful that owners of older units with less processing power will have problems with the higher compression maps and upgrade their devices?

I don't think this is the issue, all jpeg-tiles in these maps are compressed already, the GPS doesn't have to process any compression.
Readtimes and rendering the image does take more time with large rastermaps however, so maybe v4 will work faster on an eTrex 20/30.

Of course. Obviously i put little thought into that musing ... So maybe it's simply to reduce reading & rendering times in such units as you've surmised. I can't help but look for artificially-accelerated planned obsolescence by large corporations. My suspicious nature i'm afraid.

So do you think it is worth changing to V4 if I already have the V3?

I don't know if an update is necessary, if you have a slow eTrex 20/30 maybe panning the map will be a tiny bit faster.
Keep in mind that this map contains rastermaps + an underlaying routable vectormap (like City Navigator). I expect the vector map to have most changes, rastermaps don't change very often because it takes a lot of hard labour.

    I compared v3 and v4 on my Montana : from 200 m to smaller (120 m, 80 m, ....) zoom levels, I can't see any differences between the two versions.
