I don't know if an update is necessary, if you have a slow eTrex 20/30 maybe panning the map will be a tiny bit faster.
Keep in mind that this map contains rastermaps + an underlaying routable vectormap (like City Navigator). I expect the vector map to have most changes, rastermaps don't change very often because it takes a lot of hard labour.
