I downloaded the unlocked gmapsupp.img file to a USB stick and fired up the patched BaseCamp version 4.2.5

BaseCamp does not see this map. It will see other maps on the USB stick.

I copied the .img into a SDHC card and put it into my 780 which can see the map but it still bugs me why BaseCamp won't.

Any ideas?

Probably because who made it, didn't change MS flag to 0.

there are no updates for this maps NT? map in 2015 when it comes out?

This 'non-unicode' version will not be updated 4 times a year from now on. Twice a year, probably, but Garmin really only guarantees at least one update a year: 'up to 4 times a year ' means legally they only have to do one update a year to honour that guarantee. Look forward to version 2015.20 around August/September i guess.
