My preference is to put them on a microSD and if you have a conflicting (overlapping/same series different version) 'official' map on the unit just disable it. If the new 'unofficial' map causes any problems just take out the card and the unit functions normally. You can use these paths: sd:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img or sd:\Map\anyname.img (e.g. CNNT_AUNZ_2013.40.img) for easy identification. You may have only 1 in sd Garmin folder, but multiples with different names in Map folder. You can also have a Map folder on the unit.
