OK, just a few observations I ran into. One of the (older) units I have is a nüvi 350. Its memory properties are as follows:
Please note the 2,013,126,656 bytes of memory only equate to 1.87 GB!
Calculation: 2,013,126,656 / (2^30). Explanation here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
So, in all honesty, I don't see how a 1.97 GB size map is going to help me on an older unit.
That's when I decided to try to fit it on a 2GB microSD card (Kingston). Properties shown below:
Now, bear in mind that the 1,973,092,352 bytes equate to 1,881.7 MB [or 1.84 GB].
Calculation: 1,973,092,352 / (2^20) [or 1,973,092,352 / (2^30)].
So that wasn't going to help me either with a map size of 1.97 GB. I therefore decided to reduce the map further myself, using the MapSource version and selecting fewer map tiles in MapInstall, setting the destination to the 2 GB microSD. Now this is where it's getting interesting... MapInstall can't calculate!!! Let the screenshot below speak for itself...
Frustrating part is that this message only appears once the map file on the PC has been built by MapInstall (taking well more than an hour!). Only then it tells me the space on the microSD is not enough!
By trial and error I finally got the desired map, but had to leave out well more than only Ukraine. In fact, I had to leave out practically everything east of Poland and everything north of (roughly) the line Stockholm / Helsinki. Result below:
.
Having this file now (both the locked and unlocked version), I don't mind uploading it here. Just need someone to tell me how.![]()
