After yesterday's [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] (which turned out to be a ghost hunt), here's another challenge.
On eBay I also bought a nuvi 765T (FW 4.50, HWID 0870). This device has prior to the sale been used by a car rental company, illustrated by the splash screen on startup. I've been trying to get the device back to factiory default, but I can not get rid of the Hertz splash screen, not can I get the "Go Home" option back in the "Where to?" menu. See screenshots below.
What I have tried so far:
1. Hard reset (finger on right hand lower corner of screen during start up).
2. Flashed FW 3.60 via WebUpdater, rebooted (Hertz splash screen still present), shut down, reflashed FW 4.50.
3. Deleted custom POI files. This only removed the customized "Where to?" options.
Any other suggestions how to get rid of the Hertz customization? I do have another nuvi 765T (HWID 0870) from where I could copy data, if that is of any help.

I have now downloaded and installed GIR Editor v0.56. Which file do I need to open with it?
PS: Congratulations on your 1,000th post!![]()

SanFrancisco, in many related devices some functions and customizations are enabled or limited by region 16. Examples are TTS in 2x5, or more widely known TTS, SL, LA, JCV in 1xxx where there are numerous 'flavors' of splash flashed to rgn16 so as to enable or disable such functions available in the firmware. Garmin also used a crippled logo in the second generation of 2xx/W in 2009, which were actually 2x5/W hardware, to disable traffic and some other features.
As your Hertz-branded device has HWID 0870 same as a standard 765 and therefore uses the same firmware you obviously need to look for the control of the unwanted feature other than in the firmware itself and I'd be looking to flash the original US/EU 765 logo to rgn16 after dumping the current contents of that region of course. Certainly changing the boot picture of the current splash with GIR_Editor can give you the familiar 'Garmin' on boot but that won't change the controls likely contained in the rest of rgn16. If you would also like to have the home icon back then read on.
Best to make a backup of the current logo by dumping region 16 and then flash the standard logo.bin to it. You could dump 16 from your other 765 to use in the Hertz unit. Read this thread: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. If you're still unsure how to proceed with dumping and flashing via SD card, then follow the guide in the spoiler below. All at your own risk of course if you proceed.:
Spoiler:
YES, that did it!!!
Thank you for the link to the GIR Editor thread, Cnfhbr. I will do some more reading on that for possible future use.
I followed the procedure by Butters and indeed in one step got rid of both the Hertz splash screen and got the "Go Home" icon back!
Thanks to both of you guys for your help. I already start to feel quite at home here...
Edit:
For those interested, here's the backup_16.bin file:

You're most welcome pardner. Always a pleasure to help another Californian. If I decide to slum it up to SFO in the near future you can buy me a coffee ... or a limousine. Not fussy.Did you notice any other 'missing' functions before you flashed it other than the 'home' icon?
PS: Thanks for uploading the backup_16.bin. I'll have a look at that and the standard logo.bin in HexCmp to see what's different in it other than the BMP, but really it'll be academic interest only of course.
I must admit that the splash screen and missing "Go Home" icon irritated me so much, that I did not bother to look any further for other tweaked features.
I thought you might be interested in the backup_16.bin, even if it is of academic interest. Hence the upload. Have fun with it.
Edit:
You're always welcome for a coffee or even a beer. You'll find me at the East side of the Bay.![]()
