Maybe it is now dead. But if is non-recoverable that was always going to happen eventually because as i initially suspected its flash chip was failing. Flashing does put more strain on a dying chip.

Try leaving it for an extended period without batteries, at least for overnight. Letting all power drain from the board might clear the NV memory if that's causing the power issue.
